Talk to Me About The Deep Sea or Sea Dweller

I’ve been looking hard at sub ceramics date and no date (the 40mm models). However I’ve kind of been starting to draw a bit towards a sea dweller. I notice it’s not very popular however. I’ll only have one Rolex so it’ll be a daily wear. I have just shy of 7.5” wrist. Any insights and pictures appreciated.

Buy the submariner 41mm ... thank me later. Forget the Sea-Dweller, especially the 43mm. I have 7-1/2" wrist and the sub is perfect!

Buy what you want.

The Sea Dweller is very popular among those who like a more substantial watch on their wrist; not sure where you are seeing that it isn't.

Unfortunately the secondary on the 41 is outside of my budget range. The 40mm is within range so I was considering it but then saw a sea dweller and the deep sea was close to the same range which got me thinking.

For daily wear get a Sub. Either 11 series or 12 series.

Love mine! I do have a pretty big wrist and it’s a heavy piece, but I enjoy it immensely. I will say if I could only own one Rolex for now and forever more, I would probably go with a 41mm subdate just because it’s a bit more versatile, but I have absolutely 0 regrets getting mine and it was my grail from its release in 2014 until I acquired it last year.

I wear it frequently and love every minute I have it on. This is definitely one that can be had from an AD without much if any history since many don’t have the wrist for it, so consider looking for a new one at MSRP rather than grey unless you can get under MSRP from grey (I don’t track secondary market prices on my JC because I have 0 desire to sell or trade it). Good luck!

Love wearing my JC Deep Blue DSSD. Only watch and wearing daily, not completely sure about this but it wears very well on my 7 inch wrist.

I’d say its the SDDS, the dial of JC edition is nicer, bracelet adjustment as well, to me the SDDS seem like a full mode SD43.

Have all 3 41 sub, 43 SD and the 44 DSSD. All three are awesome. I think the SD43 is the best all around diver of the 3. The DSSD JC is a beautiful watch. My 41 sub is the WG and black dial and the weight of the gold makes it feel substantial. I would not get rid of any of the 3.

Yes get the Submariner and be just like everyone else matchy matchy! Or get the Sea-dweller (especially the Deep Sea) and own a Rolex dive watch that is superior in every category except internet forum popularity contests.
I own both and it is really hard to put the Sub on after wearing the Deep Sea. Watches are just bigger now days (even Apple watches are 50mm). The "collectors" don't like change "it's not a proper Rolex, It won't fit under my shirt sleeve, It must be 40mm and as thin as a potato chip!". Get a SD or DSSD if that's what you like. You can thank me later!

That there is the winner. Fantastic looking watch and an amazing technical achievement.

To OP, I have the 41mm Submariner and the Sea-Dweller 16600. I personally prefer the 16600. No idea why as the 41mm Submariner is arguably better made. The 16600 just feels right.

If you are going for a one watch collection, I would suggest you may be better playing it safe and going with the Submariner.

DSSD is my favorite of the three and no issues with wearability. I've owned a D-Blue since they were first released in 2014.

I had sd43. Wrist 7.5. It’s still a little too thick so sold it. Bought the sub 41 mm. Just perfect.

I bought the sd43 thinking that it’s unique and not like the generic sub but I was rotating it with 5 other watches and it felt comfortable one day a week. I was even boasting about how comfortable it is on this forum. Then I tool it on vacation for a week last year and it felt heavy and uncomfortable after one week.

Maybe a small regret is that it was the true 50th anniversary dial without the crown. But at my age, comfort is more important than resale value.

The Sub and the Sea Dweller 43 are astonishingly different watches, not to mention the Deep Sea that’s a different beast altogether.

The Sub is something most wrists can wear in most settings. Doesn’t look off on the beach, doesn’t look off at the office. It’s the Audi Q5 or Mercedes GLC of watches.

In contrast, the Sea Dweller 43 looks best paired with Timberland boots and cargo pants. For me that’s why I like it. But it’s not my only watch.

get a 116660 or a 126660.

they are great value and technically the most impressive dive watch from rolex that doesnt cost 26k.

just make sure it has been serviced only by rolex and that the crystal is intact. i would lean harder to the 116660 because it has a 3135 which is less of a maintenance issue than the 3235.

OP, buy whatever you like and fits your wrist size proportionally.
I owned the Sub 114060 then trade it for the DSSD 126660 and loved the Deep Sea very much, and still do. After 1+yrs with the DSSD on my wrist 7-3/4" round wrist I found the DSSD had just become too thick for my liking and I missed my 114060 terribly.
I now own the Sub 124060 and couldn't be happier with its thinner profile.

My wrist is smaller than 7.5" and I love my Deepsea. Initially, I wanted a Sub, but decided to go this direction. Was able to buy it below retail during the rage of the past handful of years. Good luck to you. Don't think you can go wrong with either choice.

I have owned all three. Submariner was my first Rolex and I will keep it forever. DSSD JC is a great watch but the color and thickness didn't work for me so I sold it. I recently bought a SD43 and love it! Substantial, rare in the wild, rugged--love the size and comfort. Seems to nestle into my flat wrist very comfortably. Truth be told if I had to choose one would select the 41mm Submariner for it's versatility. Due to the fact I own a Submariner when it came time to purchase a 41mm Sub Date I passed on it for the SD43.

The SeaDweller is an occasion piece; the Sub a daily

What pictures don’t relate is the weight and height of the SeaDweller. The Sub is almost too high itself but livable while the Sea Dweller is completely unbalanced on the wrist.

Now if you like that kind of a thing, the SeaDweller is your watch.

That’s highly dependent on your physiognomy. I have an SD 43 that wears absolutely comfortably even with the diver extension in the bracelet. I can wear it daily for weeks on end when I don’t have formal occasions. But I have a rather tall stature at over 1.9m.

OP, you definitely have to try, because here we have very different stories to tell you...
I'll tell you mine. For 30 years I had as daily a 5 digit Sub (16610, date). Every day.
Then I saw the SD43, I liked it a lot and, in spite of my small wrist
(6.5 inches = 16.5 cm), I bought one.
I find it very comfortable.
Since then, I alternate the two watches, and I find them both comfortable.
Which one more? Yes, Sub is more comfortable, for sure, but when I have the SD43, there is not a single moment in the day that I think
"hey man, how heavy is this watch...",
I simply forget it is on the wrist.
On the other hand, at least once a day, I look at my wrist and think
"hey baby, how beautiful you are!"

Here is a picture done in this moment, with the baby on my (very small) wrist.
ciao!

It truly has perfect proportions, so it’s size is of very little concern it it’s comfortable on your wrist. Some folks seem to have experienced it as hard to size right and disliked how it wears, but personally, like you, I just forget I’ve got it on until I look at it and think: this is so cool.

For all intents and purposes, it has a certain “cool factor” or “wild quality” to it that the much tamer Sub does not.

It’s really to the Sub as an F150 Raptor would be to a small Audi or Mercedes SUV: bigger, better at the thing it’s designed for, but less elegant in everyday life (which in turn might be what it’s most used for)

Love all subs. Bought SD43, loved the way it looked, but by the end of the was painful due to protruding caseback. Bought DSSD JC, loved it but fell out of love due to it being so large. More comfortable than SD43 strangely due to relatively flat caseback, but decided to stick with subs for divers.
