Rolex gmt 16750 manually winding feels hard
Hello i have a 16750 rolex GMT housing a 3075 movement. When i wind the watch it feels hard and crunchy compared to my other rolexes but they’re all newer models. I took it a watchmaker and he was too scared to mess with the watch since its in great condition and never been serviced should i be worried about this and not wear the watch as often?

sounds like it needs a service. i'd take it to a watchmaker that isn't scared. the models from the 80s are super wearable, i would even daily wear it.

That's a pretty common symptom for an old unserviced watch. I would certainly consider getting it serviced.

So if the watch is still good at time keeping but feels still when manually winding youd still send it in for a service?
Thank you for the replies |

Yes, a watch will often keep good time even when badly needing a service, but parts in the movement may be getting worn/damaged because the lubricants are no longer effective. It's really your choice.

Perfectly said Dan. Stiff/gritty winding is often from dirt and lack of lubrication in reversers. It can also be a result of the jewels in the auto work needed adjustment as to change the endshakes on the reversers. While a movement might seemingly keep good time, it could be very much in need of an overhaul.

If you simply let the power reserve drop to zero (stop) when you wind it will be like butter. Once it’s fully wound you get that resistance… yes that is the issue.

Thats not really correct. Even after 40 winds and full power on the mainspring a properly serviced watch should still wind smoothly (maybe not as buttery as at the beginning) but the breaking grease inside the barrel should allow the mainspring to slip at the proper rate. If it doesn't, then that means the barrel needs servicing (at the least).
