Thank you sir. I do not blame anyone for thinking it looked wonky, I was just looking for evidence. I still happen to think that in the pictures everything aside from the Tiffany stamp looks a bit wonky. It is very difficult to ascertain what is what based on pictures alone, which is why I kept harping on that point. The distortions caused by scratches, crazing, and other imperfections on these old acrylic crystals do not make the job any easier.

Well, I'm amazed by that.
Congratulations to the OP firstly on finding a watch that the majority of us would have dismissed at first glance, and secondly on being persistent in trying to find correct answers. I'm pleased it has worked out so well, but still a bit mystified about the dial type. |

Popular opinion seems to be the dial is not genuine, sorry. Shopping around for someone that will give you a positive outlook doesn't change the matter here being discussed.

Like I said, one guy's opinion doesn't make it genuine. A close examination and positive opinion of the subject dial with a known original would change my opinion, unless, of course, Tiffany had something to say about it or the owner had some type of documentation to further indicate this was in fact a Tiffany Datejust. By the way, writing that the dial is "likely genuine," at least for me, seems to indicate you have some reservations the dial might not be genuine. Cheers and time to move on, at least for me.

Back to your point - the T&Co printing? we will never really know I agree. Looks close. Whatever. The OP didnt pay the premium of a T&Co print anyway so I don't think $ wise it matters in this case. |

Evidence not opinion:
Tiffany.jpg But is the dial original to the watch, who knows. If Rolex services the watch, that is evidence. If there are original Tiffany papers that is evidence.

Like I said before, on any vintage specialty watch 80-90% certainty is usually the best you can hope for. I think we often forget the folks at the brands are just people too not magicians. Absent some archival records or other internal documentation their conclusions would also be based on a visual inspection. In that respect, I don’t think them servicing it would be definitive either. The Tiffany stamp was after all not done in-house by Rolex even if it is 100% original and period correct. Although full set box, papers, and/or complete service history would be ideal, that’s simply not the reality for 90% of vintage watches on the market. I’m satisfied enough with the examples provided to say it’s likely legit. A visual inspection under magnification will also help upon receipt. I appreciate all the feedback. All watches have a story, that’s what makes the hobby fun and enjoyable.

I would love to see that version of a DJ dial (without the T & Co) in a Rolex catalogue, that would put it beyound doubt in my mind

I thought the authenticators sent it back to the seller.

Unless you think all of those are fake, it’s starting to look like that dial variation is legitimate. |

I learned long ago in this hobby not to touch a watch with a story or any doubt. This DJ is a perfect example, and the primary reason most collectors won't buy a Tiffany-stamped watch without Tiffany paperwork. It doesn't really matter if the watch is authentic or not, although I appreciate that the debate in itself is interesting.
For the record, I'd never use a Hodinkee watch as an example for anything. It certainly wouldn't be the first time they've sold a bad, misrepresented watch. |
