What are your thoughts on the hands of this Tudor Snowflake Submariner 94010?
Greetings!
I just purchased this beautiful Tudor Snowflake Submariner 94010. I am not concerned about the authenticity of this watch, but I do have a few concerns about the hands. As can be seen from my pictures, the hands look okay when looked at directly on but from angles, the hands have an odd look to them. I was told the hands are original to the watch, but they look kind of shiny or almost "sticky" to me. I know sometimes the lume on these snowflake hands are "touched up" and re-lumed or stabilized. But I also have heard that sometimes the snowflake hands end up with this shiny sticky look from light oxidation. If anyone could chime in and let me know their thoughts on these snowflake hands it would be very much appreciated. Thanks! |

I have seen this before. Original imho. Tudor applied a solution to the hands in later runs due to cracking. I vote you are ok.

I used this as a justification to decline an unpolished 94010 last year.....turns out after more research they were OEM and just fine. Just like yours. I am an idiot.

Thank you everyone for your input. It is much appreciated. I'm still torn as to why the hands look the way they do. They appear to have been touched up in some way as some of you mentioned. However, I also have heard about Tudor applying a solution to the hands in later runs due to cracking (as bjmcfp mentioned) that make the hands have this sort of appearance. Everything else on the watch appears original and authentic to me and the hands even match the dial really well but I am still concerned about the "shiny, sticky" look of the hands when looking at them at certain angles.
Any more thoughts and opinions on this are still very much appreciated. Thanks everyone! |

The hands might have had something applied to stablize the lume during a service.

Hands have been stabilised using something akin to nail polish. If you can believe it, its actually a good thing that will prevent the lume from falling out. Ask yourself which you'd prefer, a bit of a sticky look in certain lights, or cracking and lume loss? That watch is a beauty BTW :)

If you swap the hands you are messing with the originality. I dont mind it. It was done oem.

^^^ Hands are fine - later 70s / early 80s hands are often glossy when looked at through a loupe because they come have from factory this way. I have handled several of these and they are the same way - tritium, not relumed, and not grainy like older hands. So if it is say a 77 / 78 or later you are good.

Looks like varnish, but maybe Tudor did it, and... who cares? Nice watch.

Quite common to see hands like this. Nothing wrong at all. Wear and enjoy.

Just compared to my ‘78 9411 and they look to be original. I can’t comment on the odd appearance however. Mine are evenly matte finish although they do have corrosion on the steel.

I think Dan hit the nail on the head.
Think a coating of some type was utilized to stabilize the lume inside of the hands. No problem for me. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk Pro |

But to be perfectly clear - the stabilization was done before the watch left the factory - as part of the manufacturing process when the hands were made. This is normal on later flakes.
