great watch all around - the Polar is my 'go to' watch daily now. the others in the rotation are getting a tad jealous.

Excellent job and what a great watch.

does it mean that they launched 2 references for the same explorer in 1985?

Visited my local AD today to look at the 114060 and 216570. I'll agree with the member above, the ND has a blingy look and feel to it. But the black dialed E2 has captured my attention and will likely be keeping my 16610 company in the near future.

Nice review and great photo shots! I just got the black Explorer 216570 and it is gaining wrist time as my daily watch. I like that it is comfortable to wear and has an understated elegance to it. Definitely not as blingy / attention drawing like my gold TT DateJust2 with the blinky gold fluted bezel.

Thanks a lot for your review.
It was fundamental for deciding to buy few days ago my new Rolex Explorer II 216570 Black Dial 42mm to a trusted trf seller.
I had a Rolex oyster date for almost 45 years as my daily watch and replaced it with this 216570.

Very enjoyable review with the mix of the history and details of the 216570!

Going back and forth deciding between the black and white dial. I've read the markers and hands on the black version are made up of white gold, does anyone know what the polar markers and hands material are made up of? Is it painted steel?

What an interesting and detailed review. I first read this several months ago... and it played an important part in influencing my decision to flip my Sub for the 216570.

Just wanted to say thank you Bo... I love my Explorer II Polar!

I purchased my Polar Explorer II last April. Reading your review just extended my honeymoon with this watch. Awesome review. One neat thing I don't see many folks mention is the lume effect. During the day, with the white dial, the contrast effect between the white face and the lumed markers is really cool looking. Just walk into your house or jump inside your car during a sunny day. The lumed markers take on a subtle white-blueish tone, which compliments the white dial. I love this subtle contrasting effect between hands/markers and the white dial.

Thanks for this review.

Great watch indeed but IMHO hands are too fat. I think as a toy watch when i see it in real.
I have a preference for the 5 digits for this reason.

Great review of the Explorer II. I'm sold and trading in my 16 year old TT DateJust for the white face Explorer II.
