Ref. 6424 - just thought I'd share
I bought this 6424 as a "dress" watch in about 2000 off of Ebay when my primary watch was a refurbished 5500 Air King form the 60s. At some point around 2002 the crown/stem broke internally and I can now pull it all the way out. At the time I paid only a few hundred dollars for it, so I tossed it in my drawer and never gave it much more thought. I got married that year and my wife gave me a new Submariner and I gave her a Yachtmaster. So I never really wore this or the modest Air King much at all. I still wear the Sub ever day, but I thought I dig out this little gem after >15 years and see if I could get it fixed. Doing some research here I see that it appears to be somewhat rare and desirable now. I believe it was an ugly stepchild back when I bought it.
So, I'm looking in to getting it fixed and then wear it for more formal occasions (happy to hear your recs for a strap!). Per comments here, it looks like I should have the movement repaired but pretty much leave the rest alone except cleaning. Since this was an Ebay special bought back when I had more money than sense, any comments to its originality or comments on things that don't look quite right will be appreciated. So, I just thought I'd share. I didn't see too many of these with black gilt(?) dials here. |

I think it's charming. I'm a big fan of the 6424: the flat profile, the no-guilt daily winding, just pure timekeeping. Yours appears to be in nice shape, as well.
