Gold for iWatch

Interesting article on the iWatch and what it could mean for Gold watches and your YG Rolex

http://tidbits.com/article/15443

If Apple uses 746 metric tons every year, we’re talking about 30 percent of the world’s annual gold production. Apple’s annual gold supply alone would be worth $28.8 billion, luxury watchmaker Rolex sells “only” $4.7 billion of product every year, from an estimated 600,000 watches.

I still prefer SS on my wrist but iWatch might make it fashionable to wear a YG Day-Date.

$10,000 for a Gold iWatch?? That's nuts. No thanks. I'll take a SS or YG any day of the week.

That sounds too bizarre to believe.

Yeah, there are people who will buy a solid, 18k gold Apple watch, but a million a month?

Come on!

This is click bait.

Thanks for the interesting article. I find it hard to believe that many people will spend $10k on a "quasi-disposable" smart watch (quote from the article, not my words)...but I guess one never knows.

I know what kind of watch I would buy with $10k, and it damn sure isn't going to be quasi-disposable.

A million a month? Who do they think they'll be selling them too. Looks like gold prices might be going down, when Apple has to flood the market with the leftover 765 metric tons of gold that they'll never get to using.

A gold iWatch makes no sense. Why would I spend an extra $9000 to wrap a disposable product in gold? What am I to do with it in 18 to 24 months when it becomes obsolete?

Help me folks, what am I missing?

Has anyone looked at Breitlings B50 Cockpit? This watch has a rechargeable battery and a super Quartz movemeht, it must be serviceable and therefore can be indefinitely updated, would this apple iwatch be serviceable to keep it going long term or will it have a short shelf life?

Because they can. Hardcore Apple folks will go nuts for them. 12 million a year?
I read some time back they sell 30 million Iphones every quarter give or take a few million I am sure..so..3 million watches a quarter for basicly a smaller version of an IPhone on the wrist and in gold at a very premium price really is very doable for them I think. Will everyone spend that and buy one? Of course not but demand for it will be huge I think.

I also think that due to something like this and the "disposable" aspect of it you might only see one or two versions IMO.

Yes, this will only be for the uber rich, those for whom buying something expensive isn't enough but has to be something both expensive and quickly disposable to show how rich they really are, and there won't be many of them save for the IG rich kids.

.

I think Josh Centers, the writter of this article, made a little confusion between Apple Watch and Gold Apple Watch.

1 million per month applies to the whole Apple Watch line, not the gold version.

Gold for iWatch

Unless Apple is planning to keep screen size and watch "movement"'the same, dimensions, people will not be able to upgrade their gold case with new innards every time the watch changes.

The few folks who do want the rectangular Apple Watch in gold are buying it for sh*ts and giggles...some utility...and because they can.

This watch will morph at least as frequently as the iPhone if not more. Though I am a hard core Apple Fan Boy, I just can't get excited about this product.

How would it change the game if Apple offers minimum trade-in value for gold Apple Watches? Seems like something they could announce at the March event.

For example, retail at 4k, trade-in at $2,500. Applies only to registered owner and to Apple Store or AOS purchased device.

Anyone who spends 10k on a disposable watch isn't thinking straight
Something disposable made of precious metal makes absolutely no sense. It's like making a solid gold bic lighter or solid gold bic razors

Yeah, no way Apple is planning on selling a million gold watches. That number was for the total iWatch production. I'll bet less than 1% of their iWatch production will be gold.

The iWatch had been preannounced when I started my search for my first Rolex. I paused a few days to decide if I should wait and get a (non-gold) iWatch instead. It was compelling -- perfect time accuracy, talks to my iPhone and iPad, etc., etc. But in the end I couldn't do it. It's not a "watch" in the sense that a Rolex is a watch. I already have an iPhone for that kind of functionality, and it's a sad day when pulling my iPhone out of my pocket is just so damn much work that I need it on my wrist instead...

When Apple hits a home run, it's breathtaking to see. The iPod saved the company when their only product, the Macintosh, had only like a 3% marketshare. The iPhone saved them again a few years later. I don't believe the iWatch will be one of those hits...

So here is my take on the iWatch. I don't think they will sell a million Gold iWatches a month but I was under the impression the cost would be $5,000 not $10k as stated in the article. SRP is supposed to be $349- $5,000. Apple sold 74.5 Million iPhones last quarter ( 6 & 6 Plus ) so there are a lot of Apple Fanboys.

If the iWatch uses 2oz of gold and gold is currently trading $1,213 per oz.
Cost of gold watch would be $349+$2,426= $2,775 ( on the very, very high side )
Margin on the watch would be over 78% for Apple. $5,000 seems more inline and the sweet spot than $10K.

I think the iWatch will be marketed towards woman as a fashion statement so this will probably be an accessory just like a $2k LV hand bag.

At $349, they will sell a ton of watches just because it's an Apple product but I don't see the serious watch aficionado paying more than $500 for it. Would you really put your Rolex in the safe and wear a iWatch? I wouldn't and I don't think the majority of people on this community would but we will find out on March 9th when the iWatch is officially announced in SF.

Sure Apple, go ahead and make those watches.

I don't get buying a gold I watch that will be obsolete next year. Soon they will be selling at the scrap gold price. I see people like the kardasnians buying these as they can afford to toss it and get the new model.

B50 cockpit as of now has many reported issues from initial owners.

why do you think the b50 cockpit is indefinitely upgradable?

Like the pluton where people shove donor movements in it?

Excuse me, but it's 5:00 pm. I need to take off my $10,000 Gold Apple iWatch and recharge it because the battery only lasts for 10 hours.
