In the footsteps of Paul (TheVTCguy)

Paul remodeled his bathroom over the summer and it got me to thinking about mine. I knew it needed paint, as the hideously loud pink that the house came with wasn't making it for me. But, Paul inspired me to do the floor as well.

It's a small bathroom, and needs to have lighter tones so that you don't feel like you're in an outhouse, so I went with a dark beige (looks kind of yellow) and brightened the woodwork.

The before picture, with the lights off. Trust me, it's shocking with the light on.

The after pictures. This is a porcelain wood look tile on the floor.

I still have to grout the shower tile and install the shower head.

Nice job, looks great - looks 20yrs newer!

Usually doesn't cost that much to changeout the bowl & cistern too, at least downunder... ours is only held on by a few screws. (Other countries like in Asia the bowl is cemented in, slightly more work to changeout)

We are living in a hotel right now as our condo is being reno=ed. Our new wood floors look similar to the porcelain faux-wood in your bathroom.

It is a big job changing out floored in a condo as the furniture is moved from room to room as they demo and replace. And previous laminate floors were glued directly to concrete, so they have to grind the old glue off, making a lot of noise for the neighbors.

Bottom line, it will take almost twice as long and who knows how much more in cost. Oh well, living in the hotel with pets is okay.

Very nice work! The room looks so much lighter and fresher. I really like the look of the floors.

Looks good Abdullah. Is the vanity a solid wood construction? We had an old 70’s vanity in one of our houses that was solid and we sanded and painted it the trim color and added some modern hardware . Looked great when it was done. In the house we have now we would like to change one of the white vanities to light gray but it is one of those thermofoil ones. Quality is great, but we are stuck with the white.

The commode is less than two years old. The old one was peach color, high volume, and leaked a lot. These install just like yours, I think. Two bolts into a flange and a wax ring to seal the connection.

I feel your pain on the demo displacement. I bought this house as a fixer upper at a substantial discount with the intent of doing DIY until it was time to move. I've done one room at a time over about four years. This is the last room. Had I done it all at once, I would have been living in motels for months.

This is a second floor bathroom and I was expecting the floor to be plywood. This floor was a vinyl tile glued to particle board. The square tiles leaked water into the particle board over time and caused a lot of swelling. I had to tear out the particle board and replace with a concrete backer board. That turned a weekend project into a two weekends and a bunch of after work project.

To compliment the wood look tile, I went with garage colonial baseboard. It's a PVC product that looks and paints like wood, but is waterproof and won't mildew in wet areas.

The vanity is veneer over HDFB with a solid faceplate and veneer doors. It has a varnish top coat, which is hard to paint over. I would need to take it out to the shop and strip and refinish it. Refinishing is tricky because too much solvent penetration will delaminate the veneer. I did refinish those white cabinet doors in the background. I wasn't so ambitious with the vanity.

Thanks guys. That tile product is from Lowes. It's amazingly realistic looking, and with a cocoa grout it's hard to tell it's not hardwood. I've done a lot DIY tile, and this was by far the easiest install.

I offered positive encouragement. You ran with it and did a great job on your own.

I love the look of your floor. We just did a spare bedroom this week in wood look porcelain tile.

Could you apply Kilz primer on the veneer and then paint? I did that with my wood stairs and it came out pretty good. Just a thought. Otherwise, some new hardware would help.

Everything else looks good.

I wanted to replace the vanity, but the missus shot me down. New hardware is a good suggestion. I'll check it out.
