(Shoes) Driver Loafer Owners Please Step Inside

Every pair of drivers that I own have this same problem. Im curious what others have done to rectify this issue?

At the toe of the shoe where the rubber/leather sole ends is unprotected leather. It gets scuffed from normal walking and tends to wear out much sooner than the rest of the shoe.

Any creative solutions out there?

Just spitballing here, but maybe use masking tape to tape off the the upper from the sole and up to section that wears. Spray the 3M invisible shield for cars sold at Advanced Auto stores. After it drys, use a little sand paper to abrade the shield off of the rubber sole tabs.

That stuff is meant to protect against stone chips and minor scratches on car paint. It is flexible so perhaps it might adhere to the leather partions that get worn out. Not sure how or if it will even work, but worth a try. It can be peeled off if you don’t like it.

I have the same problem but with toilet paper.

Before I know it I'm at the end of the roll.

My solution: Buy a new roll.

This method will most likely work with shoes as well.

Apply some leather conditioner and a bit of wax on the toe area. That will give you a bit of extra protection. Do this frequently and you will prolong the life of your loafers.

Agreed

And there’s no way drivers such as those will ever stand up to that much abuse or very hard wear.

Sure they are. I have many pairs of drivers and once they are broken in they are extremely comfortable and easy to walk in.

That's not what he meant. Drivers are not build to withstand extended wear.

Ok. When it’s time to re-sole them, let me know how that goes. :)

Sure those are fine ,bought a pair of Gucci drivers at Heathrow in 2013 still looks very good and I walk in those shoes regularly in summer -obviously not 50miles per day -.

Exactly. Also you had better make sure they are stretched out before you plan on walking more than 10 feet in them. I found that out the hard way. LOL. I had to buy some shoe stretchers to adjust several pair that I have.

Exactly. They’re made for wearing a lot, not walking a lot.

Some people’s gate will allow them to avoid this wear pattern. But the OP doesn’t appear to be one of them.

(Shoes) Driver Loafer Owners Please Step Inside

I have a long stride so this area tends to drag. These are not my everyday shoe. I wear them on occasion and usually not on a trek. This scuff wear came from working in the tasting room yesterday. I didnt walk far and was indoors mostly. I trekked out to the patio to mingle with guests mostly or to help people out to their car with cases of wine.
Mine are plenty stretched. I actually put a pair of trees in them when they were new that were 1 size bigger and leaving in those trees for a week made a world of difference!

I've got maybe a dozen different kinds of drivers, mostly Ferragamo's but also Prada, Tods and Guzzi, and I've found that regular cleaning and conditioning helps minimize the wear. There's no question that the Ferragamo's hold up exponentially better than the others, and I've got pairs that I've worn to death for nearly a decade that still look pretty good. The killer I've found with drivers is water, so you need to be careful about getting them wet, and if you do you need to dry and condition them ASAP. I love the look of suede drivers, but they are almost impossible to maintain in the toe area. The textured leathers (Prada style) also seem a little more resilient than smooth calve leathers. Honestly the well-worn look doesn't really bother me much and gives them character over time, but I try to minimize the damage.

I agree. My story:

I just did some cleaning and was convinced to finally let these Parigi go. These babies are over 12-15 years old and used HEAVILY. Abused. Pretty much worn on sun, rain, snow, beach....everywhere. Soles are worn badly and, as you can see, broken beyond repair. I contacted Ferragamo and they confirmed they are gone. Re doing the stitching and repairing sole leather would cost more than a new pair, so sadly, time to go. These have been all throughout America...Canada, US, Mexico, Central America, Caribbean, Argentina.......

I get this same wear pattern with drivers

Now, I either buy sneakers or more substantial loafers

for example

My problem is that those boxes are full with the shoes 'not in rotation' ... There is another set in 'rotation'

That is the issue with Ferragamo. Pricey? Yes, but worth every penny! I could wear them and no one would know they are about 15 years old, I am just afraid I will leave part of the sole somewhere one of these days. The more you wear them, the more comfortable they get!

Agree, size is the key of the fit ,drivers are really tricky since it must be snug but not to tight -i don t like if my toe push up the leather .I think at gucci the problem if the leather which hold the little rubber bumps wearing completely down otherwise the quality leather will hold forever.

I found a solution which is very subtle and gives a lot of protection. This came to mind from my youth and years of hockey play. Epoxy toe protector.
