How do you hold your pen?! I'm slipping!!!

So in true geek fashion, as soon as I bought my Mont Blanc StarWalker, I looked up proper penmanship grip and writing technique. I come from the age of no penmanship lessons in schools, so I have always looked like a 4yo on paper; but I wanted to do this instrument justice.

The thing is, with the slick resin shaft 'standard' grip styles leave my hand sliding down the pen if my fingers have any moisture on them at all. Of course, I can go back to my 4yo grip and it's pretty manageable; but it's a little frustrating.

Do I just keep practicing and the grip will improve over time? Am I doomed to slide forever? Am I doing this completely wrong?

Help a Padawan out!!!

I hold like your first pic and I'm 70 years old. Millennials tend to hold like your second pic or so I've noticed.

Whoops I meant those captions to be flipped! The first pic is my newly found proper grip; but my fingers keep slipping down the pen as I write, or I hold it too loose and the top end will fall into the web of my thumb.

Gripping a pen further back works superbly with fountain pens. Most folks of a certain age will do this naturally, because that’s what they learnt to write with.

If you try and do that with a ballpoint it often doesn’t work too well. Often the angle of the pen to the paper is too shallow, and it’s difficult to apply the downforce you need to make a ballpoint work properly, so if I’m writing with a ballpoint, I tend to grip it much closer to the tip.

Unfortunately, slipping is one of those things that happens with shiny ballpoints, and there’s not a lot you can do about it. It’s worse with pens that taper.

Shiny fountain pens are not generally a problem!

I wouldn't worry about my grip.

Just enjoy your pen and then add other nuances later.

The main objective is to love that writing instrument!

Other things will certainly follow!

I will switch between these two grips depending on what I’m writing, what I’m writing on and what I’m writing with.

For my fountain pen it’s always the ‘correct’ way.

For ballpoints and the like then it’s the thumb round over the side grip

Thanks for all the tips, everyone! I just keep it comfy and fun for myself. As I practice it gets a little easier to keep in place, and I do tend to switch grips depending on what I’m doing. I also notice modern cheap pens are usually so skinny that a proper grip almost feels incorrect.
