My Deepsea Blue, Sea Dweller Red and Green Sub. Visual comparison.

I got my Sea Dweller last week and was eager to compare it to my Deepsea as soon as I could. Since my safety deposit closes earlier during covid19 days and not working on weekends, only got a change to get all 3 watches the other today. And WOW, I had no idea that Depsea would be so beefy compared to Sea Dweller. It’s not only feels heavier when you put it on your wrist, but it’s also visually HUGE when you put it right next to it. For size comparison I added Hulk which is my daily wearer for past few months. Another thing that right away pops when you put two watches together is cyclops date window on Sea Dweller. I think I like the Deepsea more because it doesn’t have one, watch just looks neater. But looks like that cyclops window is a trend and I think in a future models Deepsea would also have one as well.
What do you guys think?

Wow! I thought the new SS subs were beefy compared to the older models but the hulk looks svelt compared to the SD's. That being said, all three are lovely and that's a hell of a collection. I do personally like the no-cyclops aesthetic myself.

Yeah I love the DSSD but did they have to put the ENTIRE thickness of that watch in the mid case? Just makes it look enormous. Great trio there. The SD43 looks gorgeous in that first picture.

Thanks for posting this comparison. I’m surprised the sea dweller and sub look so similar in size. Have never seen side by side before. Expected more visual difference.

You mention that the DSSD looks neat because it has no Cyclops. But to me, the date window looks wrong in all the Sea-Dwellers bar the SD43.

Bear in mind the date window is placed away from the edge of the dial in order to be used in conjunction with the Cyclops and look good with it.

What Rolex should have done with the Sea-Dwellers without the loupe is move the date window to the right, which they didn't for obvious cost / benefit reasons, considering how niche SDs are.

I wouldn't have bought my SD43 had it come with no Cyclops and inadequate date placement.

With the DSSD, one has to consider the thickness of the Crystal which is basically flush around the perimiter with the Rotating bezel and the caseback assembly doesn't protrude as much as the one on the SD of any flavour.
The extra depth has to go somewhere and the thickness of the watch overall seems to be within the range of plausability for a watch with such a high depth rating.
I think when one compares the thickness of the Challenger Deep variant of the DSSD to the Omega equivalent they are similar.

A more interesting perspective is the no improvement in depth rating for the SD when it became thicker for no apparent reason with the introduction of the 6 digit references.

Yep, Rolex should have developed a movement specific for the DSSD, with a larger calendar wheel with larger numbers, and position the date window closer to the edge of the dial.

Hopefully they do that in a future version of the DSSD.
Part of the reason I enjoy wearing that more than my Sub or GMT is because the DSSD doesn't have a cyclops, which is a rather kludgy solution to making a date more legible.

I prefer the magnifying glass under the crystal and under the hands in my former AP.

I really like the 6th photo down, that shows how the domed crystal on the JC makes a nice smooth transition into the bezel.

People are complaining about the thickness of the DSSD now. If a Cyclops was fitted to the inside it would be an even thicker watch when factoring in the Cyclops and clearance to the hand stack.

I love my DSSD and the way that the dial looks clean without the cyclops. The doomed thick crystal acts as a magnifier and so don’t think they’d put a cyclops on one.

Interesting observation by Eonflex about the date window being closer to the edge. But, would be difficult to make the date any bigger as the diameter of the DSSD watch face (excluding the bezel and ring lock) is smaller than the Subs and GMTs.
