Hello all,

I know some of you are tired of these “is it safe to wear Rolex in XXX?” Questions. But this time I really need some advise since I am heading to a semi-war zone ( according to the internet ) - Hong Kong

I will be living in Central, where most of my business meetings will take place. But recently, there are a lot of protests / riots / police action there. Since I am there to do business, I want to dress decent and wear my rolexes. But all these mask rioters out there really worries me. Not just for my watches but for my safety as well.

Please give advice if you are in Hong Kong.

I wouldn’t go anywhere near the Uni (which is now a makeshift fortress) bcse you might be hit with an arrow.
Also don’t take any photos of the protestors because you’ll get accosted.
Also don’t say anything that is different to their views bcse you’ll also get accosted.
Better to ‘say nothing’ or wear a mask

Everyone is still wearing their Rolex watches here. Probably still more per capita than any other city.

Hong Kong is safe.I have been many times,you will see scores of Rolex watches being worn.No problem with street robbery however the riots are a different matter although shouldn’t affect the safety of wearing a Rolex.

Hongkong probably has more luxury watches (rolex and up) per square feet than any other city on earth.

You’d be fine wearing a RM or PP in Hong Kong...

Your biggest problem for most of the day will be transport issues. You can get stuck across the harbour via cross harbour tunnel at Causeway Bay it has been closed and the subway.

Difficulties of travel happen from late morning, so move early. If you have meetings in Central you can always walk back to your hotel. If you have travel insurance, it will be likely be void if you go near a protest.

Hong Kong is generally one of the safest places.

I have family living in the city and in new territories. The city is safe outside of the areas where protests are taking place. Common sense and situational awareness is paramount no matter where you are in the world. Travel safely and good luck

And you’re from NY, ironic, since NY is considered a ‘war-zone’ unsafe city. Do you feel safe in NYC?

I don't think it was unreasonable for the OP to ask given the current unrest in HK

I think you made the right call, better to feel comfortable with what you're wearing. Though I imagine you would be fine wearing a Rolex too

I agree. Given the circumstances in that city right now, this Forum would seem like a great place to make contact with people actually on the ground there, who would have a perspective that's meaningful.

I think doing due diligence for personal safety in a foreign country experiencing government protests is on point. What better open forum to ask This wasn’t an average can I wear my Rolex in xyz large city thread.

Sounds like a wise move to me. Better safe than sorry as they've got a tremendous amount going on around there. This is why I love my Citizen. For situations like these it's the go to piece. Safe travels

The personal safety aspect question I can understand. The media make the situation A LOT worse than what is actually happening in HK (I was there all last week). However, to think wearing a Rolex in HK will make you some kind of target is laughable. It is a hell of a lot safer to wear a Rolex, VC, Patek or whatever in HK than anywhere in NY.

No worries wearing a Rolex in HK. I do every day. Unlike most cities elsewhere there hasn't been a spinoff criminal element that always uses any street conflict as cover/an excuse to rob, loot, and steal under the guise of "protest".

As others have mentioned, your biggest worry will be transportation issues if there's roving protests targeting the public transport in order to hamstring the city.

Best advice for personal safety is to avoid the MTR trains during protests that target the public transport since the underground stations are confined spaces with lots of people. Not a good place to be if something is set alight, tear gas dispensed, or fighting ensues. Taxis are fine although detours abound when streets are closed and bus lines become truncated.

Avoid getting caught up in a street crowd and resist the urge to spectate. There's even apps now that map out whereabouts in the city to avoid on the day and for what reason. You may be inconvenienced, but you don't need to fear for your own safety if you use common sense avoidance and pay attention.
