8th Wonder of the WIS: Monta Glidelock

I have been a Sub-C owner for about four years. I have grown to love the Glidelock clasp, and use it almost every day. The elegance of the non-pierced sides of the clasp, the perfect rectangle it forms when the watch is closed on my flat wrists, and the authoritative clicks and snaps the clasp makes just add to the enjoyment I experience of it.

Now to why I created this thread.. I recently bought a Monta Oceanking Gen 2 and I have to say, the bracelet and clasp blew me away. The fully articulating links and pivoted end links actually make it more comfortable than my Sub, and the rectangular clasp is delightful. The clasp is very, very similar to the Rolex Glidelock, but it has less tracks (less adjustment mm), is easier to engage/disengage (not sure if pro or con), and does not have a spring loaded clasp closure, but instead uses a pressure fit. I am baffled at how good they were able to make this watch bracelet at this price point, and even more baffled that they seemed to have beat out Omega, Tudor, Oris, and Grand Seiko at this game. (The SMP adjustment is not elegant, the Tudor Pelagos clasp looks too toolish to me, and the Grand Seiko divers are still using the MarineMaster ratchet technology that they created in 2002 and too closely resembles the rough side of a cheese grater for my taste).

If you have or handled a Monta Oceanking Gen 2, would you agree? Let's hear your thoughts! (Keep in mind I am discussing the bracelet only and not the whole watch, as I know a strong argument can be made for the purity and impressiveness of in-house development)

Nice watch. Makes you wonder...... exactly how much money does each Rolex cost to produce ? Not including any marketing costs. Too bad Rolex isn’t publicly traded

I have a lot of admiration for what Monta is doing. This second generation of the Oceanking is very close to being something truly special. I expect they will continue to refine it and become an even stronger competitor for those upmarket that cost thousands more.

I agree, I am very proud to own the Oceanking and feel that I am supporting a company that is trying their best to give a unique value to the watch community. The OK does feel a bit beta-esque and can use some additional refinement which will come in due time I'm sure with future revisions.

That's a great thought.. I hear that the dealer pays roughly 60% to Rolex for the watch, and you have to figure that Rolex makes at least a 20% profit margin, I'm sure someone will chime in and give us an estimate of the cost of say, a Sub C!

I had some time after work to mock up this clasp comparison as I still can't get my head around how Monta managed to do this.. I mean it does look very similar to Rolex so we have to give the credit there, but why is it so much better than the runner-ups!
