Pressure test advice - 116610

Hey watch fam,

In April I am taking my beautiful wife to the Bahamas for our 10 year anniversary. We’re not just going to sit on our butts drinking fruity cocktails (though that will also be happening), we are going to go out and explore a bit. We plan on scuba diving at least 5 out of the 7 days we are there. Since I wear my Sub everywhere I’m going to be taking it diving with me. How could I pass up the chance to let the Sub do what it was designed to do?

Question for the group. Should I consider having my Sub pressure tested before we go? Local watchmaker wants $75 for a full pressure test. It’s not so much the money I’m worried about as the need? I swim with my watch all the time and it’s been fine but I’ve never taken it diving.

I bought my 116610LN in April 2017 so it will be 2 years old by the time we make it to the Bahamas. I figured it’s still under warranty if something crazy happens, but couldn’t hurt to ask you guys on your opinions.

Does it need a pressure test or nah?

Thanks!
Paul

I say nah, unless you've banged it up or dropped it during the time you've had it. Since it's still under warranty you're fully covered. Save the 75 and spend it on more fruity cocktails.

I think it's wise to have it tested, but 75 bucks for a test? That's a ripoff! My AD does it for free, and the other place I use for convenience charges me 5.

I personally wouldn't worry about it, should be fine. Take pictures for the forum!

I definitely wouldn't. I would use that $75 on some drinks and go diving with it during the day.

Just make sure the crown is screwed in all the way, that's all you need to do before taking the dive. Enjoy

Had my diver pressure tested after a year - they did it with the crowns open.

If you’re going diving it’s not a bad precaution to take, but unlikely there would be issues. $75 is way overcharging for that service though.

Ditto about the crown - that is the only way your watch should fail the water test - and also Rolex repair g'tee as they can tell it came in that easy way!!

Enjoy the worry free holiday

If peace of mind is important then go ahead, but I'm sure it'll be fine. Have a blast!

Screw in the crown and use the $ for something else. There is absolutely no need to pressure test it. Let’s see some pics of it in its natural environment when you get back. Subscribed!

Hi Paul, not sure what to advise about the pressure test. Just wanted to wish you and your wife a great time.

Find another AD. Mine does pre-holiday pressure test for free. Takes 2 minutes.

Find a different place to have it pressure tested. $75 means they think you're a sucker!!!!

Thanks everyone! I learned a couple of things from thread.

1) my watchmaker is drastically overcharging for pressure testing.

2) my ad may be able to pressure test, I should ask!

3) while pressure testing is subjective, most feel it’s not needed given the age of the watch and the fact it’s under warranty.

Thanks! Really appreciate it. :)

I test my own watches, never had one fail including the ones older >10 years, so yours still being brand new doesn't need a test.

If my go to watchmaker or AD would charge me that amount for a 5 minute job I'd never go there again.

Happy diving

I would wager no test done for free or $5 is the wet/condensation test using a fathometer and hot plate. This is the only true test of water resistance.

The air/vac testing equipment (while very reliable) is only an indicator and is not infallible. This is the test you will get for free.

$75 for 30 mins of a watchmakers time to do the test properly is excellent value for money.
