Sub vs Sub date

Its seems most people on the forum prefer Sub ND. Is this a recent trend or has it always been this way? I bought my Sub Date about 7 years ago before I was on any forum and wasn't aware that there was such a dislike for it as I've seen recently.

It's a forum phenomenon, a representation of a niche interest group. There's a reason seven out of eight Submariner models have a date feature, and it's not because of what members here think.

I’m SubC date all the way!

Everyone has their thoughts and opinions; both are fantastic watches and it really comes down to personal preference!

Whoa! I don't know where you get "Dislike" for the Submariner Date. I certainly don't sense that in any way. I think that here on the forums a lot of guys are more purist or traditionalist when it comes to watches, and the original Sub was without date.

Nevertheless, I still feel a lot of love for the Sub Date as well. I don't have any statistics as to percentage of sales, but I think if you went off the watch forums and saw what other guys are wearing, you might find that most go for the Sub Date.

I have ordered a 114060 (Sub No Date), and was offered a Sub Date today by my AD. But personally I prefer the 114060 so I am going to wait. It was a difficult decision to turn down the Sub Date, however, a I certainly believe there is a lot of love for it as well.

Cheers,
Carl

Another date vs. no date. I can’t even.

Except to say no date.

NDS here. Prefer the cleaner dial. But I certainly can see why a person would go for the date function. No wrong choice here.

I don't think most people who go out and buy a Sub-Date are even aware that a No-Date is an option. Also, the cyclops is Rolex' trademark to many people. There's no way someone who is buying a Rolex as a status symbol is going to give up that cyclops.

The No-Date is generally an enthusiasts watch. That is why you see so much love on the forums for it. It is also the original way the watch was designed. Others, like myself, simply prefer not to have a Cyclops on a diver.

Folks here doesn't dislike the Sub no date..... some people have a preference to the classic sub. I have both because I couldn't decide which one I like more so I got them both.

Great point. When I bought mine I wasn't aware that there was a ND.

The Submariner is the most interesting piece in the Rolex lineup. Being the first professional model, and not having a date, many people want the closest thing to the original interpretation. People study this watch and the many variations of it in great magnitude. Those are the types of enthusiasts you see on the forum here.

As someone who really appreciates history, I couldn’t help but be drawn to the Submariner. It’s an icon.

Sure the date is great, but it’s not the original.

The Date Sub is a fine watch, but the Submariner is the one for me.

I acquired recently a submariner and a week later a submariner date LVc. 3 weeks ago I was ready to flip the Submariner but I gave it some wrist time and I fell in love with it. It's cleaner, easier to read and I feel like I am wearing an absolute timeless piece well, because it is. Not having the cyclops is a non issue for me. The LVc for me is all about the color. If they made an LVc no date I feel most people would be all over it. I know I would.

N00B question here, too lazy to research tonight, but considering no date is a simpler complication, does it have any benefit compared to the date (example longer power reserve)?

Not sure I agree that people don't like the Submariner Date. As can be seen from your experience, when people(general public) think of a Submariner they think of the one with the date, because people use it, the cyclops is associated with Rolex and because to most consumers they think the no-date Submariner is only purchased by someone who couldn't afford the date model.

On the forums this topic comes up often enough to probably have a sub section of threads dedicated to just this topic, and there's always a split. Plenty of fans for both.
What I can say is considering that the date model comes in every variation of dial color and metals, it's pretty impressive that the no-date model only comes in black but has such a huge loyal fan base.

I prefer the Submariner 114060 of the two black dials.

I prefer Submariner Date. Had a 14060M years ago, but found myself missing the date feature. And I think the cyclops lens is a neat Rolex feature.

Personal preference, but I love the classic Sub “no date.” When it comes to the cyclops I like the dressier pieces like the DJ or DD.

Sub vs Sub date

Hard to pick either Sub or Sub Date. Both deserve to be in a collection. Ideally it would be great to have both. I think 114060 plus 116610LV is a great combo - black no date + green with date. Working on sourcing the latter at the moment.

This has been talked to death, but... I love talking about it, so;

I had the opportunity to purchase either, and tried both on my wrist at the AD. As soon as I wore them I knew that the clean look of the ND was the one for me. NO contest. The cyclops doesn't bother me per say, but I do like the ND clean symmetrical face much more. This is a personal feeling, not a condemnation of anyone that feels the opposite.

I prefer the date however, as I get older and my eyes don't work as well up close, the date becomes less and less important to me.
