New Switzerland lockdown starts Monday

What now with the post-Christmas Rolex shipments restarting?

Does this shut down the whole industry?

Retail shops yes, manufacturing and corporate, it looks like not

Switzerland, which has so far taken a lighter touch to restricting business and public life, said it will close shops selling non-essential supplies from Monday.

It ordered companies to instruct employees to work from home where possible, or require staff in workplaces with more than one person to wear masks.

Yep. May be a good short term top to sell off less worn pieces.

I did not read anything in the article that suggested a shutdown of factories.

They are telling people to work from home if possible. Shutting down non-essential shops and a 7pm curfew.

Swiss watch making is primed for these conditions.Given there is nothing else to do, I'm sure Rolex is still operating. Lights are still on at Acacias building, I'll spin by the plan les ouetes on a weekday and tell you if people are still showing up..

If there’s enough chocolate and liverwurst in the lunchroom they’ll lockup and keep working.

It may also depend if the are keeping borders open. Many of their employees do not live in Switzerland.

Fronteliers are allows to cross boarders with some documents but truth be told the boarders are easy to cross. I sometimes do my grocery shopping in France.....my wife got pulled over the other day and they just check that you are not illegally importing goods.

We've been locked down for a while. All AD's near me are closed for the foreseeable.

For what it’s worth, Marc Goldberg claims from his insider that Rolex is operating at reduced capacity as some of their employees are affected by covid and are from France and cannot cross into Switzerland due to the restrictions. Start at 3:50 on the video.

Corporate bodies need to consider legal liability (criminal & civil) if they require workers to attend for work and an employee contacts COVID19 and suffers a serious illness or dies. Employers have to consider safe work environment requirements and insisting an employee work when it is a non-essential business could have ramifications for top level management....

So I would think Rolex would act in a precautionary manner in shutting down production.

Just my

Over 4 production sites 3000 employees would be thinly spread .
I think to keep production going under safe covid rules ,50% will be easy to manage ,maybe even 75% .
Production will continue ,but will be less.No question .
That's when and how Swiss laws allow.

The new normalcy under which the world will have to operate for at least the whole of 2021 (and I am sorry to say, most likely much longer )
Vaccine will be as effective as the flue shot .Yearly occurrence ,because just like influenza ,the little covid bugger changes itself the whole time ...

Our second wave is much worse :
Younger people
More lungs
Quicker progress of disease
More transmittable.

What we did see the past winter was NO influnza,so measures of masks, hands, distancing worked great ,BUT not that great for Covid .Practical proof that Covid is MUCH more transmittable compared to influenza.

Another interesting observation in the general population : Anti retrovirals for HIV treatment ,protect against Covid .

Good points. My perspective is that manufacturing processes take a little longer, processes are not running as smoothly as normal. Staffing is reduced because staff are out of work - quarantined, or are caring for a loved one who needs care. Output is reduced, regardless of industry. We shall see.

2020 was rather a surprise in that regard.

Yea not sure who this guy is. Some dog trainer from chicago?! Youtube is tricky these days. So much click bait to get views = money. Of course he's going to say outrageous things or word of mouth info.....he needs views/subs

French embassy in bern sent out an update yesterday. Cross boarder workers remain entry to Switzerland, this is unchanged since June 2020.

Both geneva and swiss national policies don't restrict working when wfh cannot be applied. Companies just need to comply to safety standards (masks, social distancing, limiting # of people in office). My office is till open however its easier and safer to WFH.

You took the words right out of my mouth. I watch his vids for pure comedy entertainment only. He pulls stuff out of left field. SMH!

Anyway, I am curious how this lockdown will impact Rolex supply and demand.

I anticipate this will slow things down significantly if not grind non-essential work to a halt.

During the first wave / lockdown it took a very long time to get inventory at AD's. I even got an Omega catalog from Switzerland through Swatch Canada that I had completely forgotten about or simply thought was not coming.

I guess time will tell how this one plays out.

Those poor people. I feel terrible for them.

Honestly I’d rather see the Swiss people be able to go back to living normal and I find that more important than when watch production will get back to normal. YMMV.
