i've been told that when Rolex brought out the MkV they were unhappy with how the the red lettering appeared when applied directly onto the dial as opposed to red on white, they reverted back to the MkIV dials again until MkVI was issued

Observations...

Looking at these pics it's interesting to note that some hands on watches from the same year have quite a bit of corrosion while other hands are like the day they left the factory, yet the patina is very similar

Also interesting to note that hands and lume plots don't seem to age to the same patina

The technical drawings come from the book "Vintage Rolex Sports Models" . The pics are showing the evolution of the Submariner shape over the years. However, the 1680 isnt illustrated on that list. Talking of books, I had the pleasure of sinking a few beers over easter with Gabriel (Sweargen) and we spent most of the time drooling over the pictures in the italian book "Submariner Story", some very rare specimens listed in that book

Some people were giving us some stange looks when we started comparing Red Subs and flicking through the pages between pints

Question for the Red 1680 Lovers...I noticed in these pics that some of the 1680's have the "Flat 4" bezel and some don't. When did ROLEX use the "Flat 4" on these 1680's?

I took the pictures (above this reply) after I read this post from you.

Meaning I didn't include the bezels, DOH.

FYI, all mine have flat fours except the one with serial (2867XXX) which is the second to last in my range. So not sure why a later serial (3061XXX) also has a flat four.

Obviously I can't guarantee the bezels are the ones that came with the watch forty plus years ago.
