Very interesting. Good call.

I'm sure it will come out great.

No it wasn’t. End of story. Let’s see now how the watch ended up.

Cheers :)

My watch maker ordered a parts kit from Switzerland to replace some tired and worn parts within the movement. It was last serviced in 1986, so this wasnt a big surprise. Given the Covid-19 outbreak and its affect on global shipping, I dont expect it to arrive for a while. I will keep you all posted, but things might be quiet for the next 2-4 weeks. Sorry.

Does anyone know why the papers for this watch have only 'RM 58' written on them?

I was thinking it might be 'Rolex Melbourne' and the 58 might be 68? As I think my father in law bought this in the later part of the 60's. Thoughts/cheers :)

It’s a mystery. You might try doing some research on Rolex dealers in Melbourne back in the 60s. They might still be in business and you could ask.

Thank you mate :) Yeah I guess it will be a mystery. I should have an update on this little 'project' in a week or so. I know I need to be patient, but its hard to wait for this to be back and in use again.

Now its where it belongs.

The problem is the dial is really bad. The hands are in a bag but the hour hand is damaged.

There are other missing parts like the bracelet and the number ring from around the dial.

Can anyone recomend what I should do?
And that is an absolute vintage.

I’m glad you kept it. You will cherish it when it’s done.

I love my dads watch. It makes me happy that it’s now fixed back to OG condition

Give it some time. Watchmaking is tedious work.

Did you ever show the dial condition?

The dial is still in the watch as far as I know. The plan was to have it taken out and shipped to me so I could post it to Hong Kong. Again, I dont want to rush my watch maker, but I would have thought this could have been done right away.

Not sure why he would wait. It could take a while and it’s not like he can complete his work without the finished dial...

I know and it would shorten the restoration by months. Nevertheless I will give the man his space.

I'm a bit torn now. The dial is pretty bad, possible a write off? The thing is, this is the original dial my step dad had in this watch the entire time (I'm pretty sure, unless it was put in during the 1978 service) and part of me wants to keep it. This guy in Hong Kong apparently can restore it without wiping it. I said he absolutely MUST not do that. Should I just leave it as is with new hands or have it tarted up in HK? I am definitely keeping this so I dont care about resale.

Does anyone else have a rolex with a dial like this? I have looked at some of your photos and they all appear to be very nice, no bad dials to be seen. Or has everyone just had their dials touched up too?

Just seeing this and I'm so happy you are going to rebuild the watch!

I wish I had some background here to help but unfortunately I do not. There are many here who do and will. Ill be following your journey! Best of Luck finding the right people and parts!

There’s no harm in that dial having some fresh life giving to it. It’ll still be the same dial after it. It’ll also last you through your lifetime with legibility.

That dial looks pretty bad tbh. I would be sending it to James Hyman.

no one is a big fan of relumed dials but regarding the condition of yours, I'd say no choice to make it beautiful again, I'd suggest the same guy, Jame Hyman aka the the alchemist relumer : https://www.instagram.com/thealchemistrelumer/

Send him the watch with the hands in order to have a matching dial and your watch will look much much better

I thought it just needed to be relumed, but once the dusty crystal was removed I see some scratches. I think this was left out in the open without its crystal for a while...a long while.

I do not remember who did you use in Hong Kong(?), but CWR is based there too.
They can be able to restore that dial.
