Aftermarket or Authentic?

Just wondering if you guys and gals think this bezel is authentic or not..
The diamonds are real

Looking to restore the watch back to factory, its an 80's Day/Date, Gold

If the bezel is not authentic, would be interested in selling/finding the authentic bezel for this watch

Also, the crytal is attached to the bezel and not the watch face, would this be the same if i came across a factory bezel?

Thanks in advance...

Aftermarket.

I can tell by the size of the diamonds. As well as the channeling. Doesn't not look like work that Rolex would do.Very sloppy and they usually don't do a channel setting.

Thats what I figured... Now to just get a factory bezel, and figure out how the crystal attaches....

I agree that it is aftermarket, but those are prong set, not channel set. The image is dark, but there are 2 shared prongs between the stones

The crystal isn't really attached to the bezel, it's held in with pressure. If you push firmly from the top it should pop out of the bezel. Keep in mind if it's an acrylic crystal it can crack doing so, especially if it's old.

So if I get the authentic bezel, it will fit in the same way?

I might add that in my 35+ years in the business I have seen some very "imaginative" methods to secure aftermarket bezels. It might possibly be epoxied to the bezel. If that's the case, it's probably going to destroy the crystal to get it out. I have a customer with an aftermarket 5 carat total weight diamond bezel on his Day/Date that someone simply glued to the case. It looks ridiculous.

Rolex bezels, either sapphire or plastic, are held on by tension/compression. The sapphire crystal uses a gasket that fits between the case and bezel. The sapphire crystal has a groove around the perimeter that snaps into the gasket. On plastic crystals, the bezel compresses around the crystal itself against the case.

Factory bezels and crystals will almost always fit better, and provide the needed water resistance.

Yes, it will use the same mechanics. Many times I need to use a press to get the bezel and crystal separated after they are removed from the watch case.

The model number will always reveal whether the watch left Rolex with a diamond bezel fitted. An 1803 with the diamond bezel from an 1804 will always have to be explained. Fine if buying it only for yourself, but commercially it’s less than ideal.
