Seriously? Every #1 seed has overlooked the #16 seed. Virginia is just the first to pay the price. Considering the circumstances, the underdog played a flawless entire game.

Ok. But you can't over look these games. 68 of the best teams in the country, in theory and if your not careful this is what happens. This isn't conference games, 16th seed is playing for their lives for National Championship- ACC vs AEC

and by 20 points good for them. Love an underdog and they were getting 20 points

Locals are excited the ub bulls pulled an upset. Tough to compete with the big money schools in a small market. As an alumn I’m pleased

Tough to root against a team named Retrievers... Still scratching my head how Virginia rolled through the ACC.

As an Arizona man, just want to pass along a big thank you to the Virginia Cavaliers.
We've enjoyed the spotlight enough this season.

Sorry, but no where close to as big of an upset. Connecticut was ranked 4th (KP) and George Mason 22nd. https://kenpom.com/index.php?y=2006

That game went to OT where UConn missed a 3 to win the game.

Here we have UVA who is not just a 1 seed but the overall 1 seed not getting upset by a buzzer beater but getting destroyed by 20 points to UMBC who is ranked 168th!!!! https://kenpom.com/index.php

UMBC was 3 games back in their own conference. They squeaked out a single possession win in their conference tournament just to make it in.

In 1980 USA beat Russia in hockey by 1 goal. Imagine if they would have won that game by 6 or 7 goals. That's how big of an upset this was.

NBA players help but certainly are not determinative of a team's strength. UVA was no. 1 overall and lost to a 16 seed for the first time in history. This could not have been a bigger upset. If they were a different 1 seed, the argument would be that the upset could have been bigger if they were the no. 1 overall. In this case, they were. Biggest upset of all time.

Goes to show that style of play matters. The tournament always shows that cinderella teams can get white hot and knock off anybody. The problem with UVA is that they lack the offense to compete if their opponent gets hot. That's what happened.

You still don't seem sold. Let's take a look at this:

http://www.vegasinsider.com/college-.../team/virginia

UVA was favored by 20.5 points over UMBC. That's the 2nd largest point spread all season for the Cavilers. The highest was a 26.5 point spread over Austin Peay State. UVA won that game by 44 points.

What do you think Vegas would have paid out more? A bet on George Mason (again ranked 22nd by Ken Pom) beating UConn (4th) by 2 points or a bet on UMBC (168th) beating UVA (2nd) by 20 points?

If you don't like Ken Pom use any rankings you like. According to Sagarin UConn was ranked 3rd and George Mason 15th vs UVA 8th and UMBC 177th.
https://www.usatoday.com/sports/ncaa...rin/2006/team/
https://www.usatoday.com/sports/ncaa...rin/2018/team/

The difference is insane not to mention 2 points vs 20 points

Growing up in Buffalo, seemed like most people rooted for Syracuse - which I never understood - but UB didn’t have much of a program back then. I can’t remember for certain, but maybe they weren’t even D1.

At any rate, with St. Bonaventure out, I’d be thrilled to see UB make a run.

Yeah there are more 'cuse fans here than bulls fans that is for sure. Not sure how long they have been D1 but they have only made the tourny 3 times and that is all since 2015 so it is a somewhat fledgling program.

Watching that game is what makes the tourney great if you didn’t have a dog in the fight.

OTOH, Nova looked unbeatable yesterday, and my Mountaineers will face them should we win tomorrow. Our D weakness is rotating to cover the corner 3’s. Too much help defense inside could leave Nova’s shooters wide open all night.

But we have to get there first.

Chances of making it to the Elite 8 just went up drastically now that Cincy lost. Kentucky really benefiting from all this madness.

I really doubt it, both teams looked pretty bad, all for the Orange because they made the win, but they sure didn’t look like a final four team. Who knows this year, but I think some of the other teams that are dominating are looking good. I hate to say this, but Purdue is looking good.
