There's a fair amount of people out there who love the brand but have no clue what is what. It's unfortunate but it happens.
My recent encounter of this was when someone was talking about my Submariner, after asking me what it was, then told me they wanted the "black and red surround" version of it. |

Yep it happens, at a business meeting last year, after the meeting finished, I complimented the guy on his Black Bay, he looked at me as if I was speaking another language, I said Your Tudor, Black Bay. Still puzzled look on his face, then I pointed to his watch and he said, Oh, yeah, Thanks its a dive watch. Oh Well, a sale is a sale.

While wearing my 116713, a new guy at work told me I "made a good choice getting the black one, everyone gets the blue one"... I said oh... well... it's a GMT so the choice was easy.

I had something similar happen last year. A gentleman struck up a conversation at a restaurant and I noticed he was wearing a newer TT black Sub. I said “nice Sub.” He looked confused and I added “your watch . . . it’s a Rolex Submariner, right?” He replied, oh, yes, my wife bought me this Rolex earlier this year.” No clue other than it was a Rolex.

At my local Mercedes dealer back in Florida, saw a gentleman in the customer waiting area wearing a Daytona Everose chocolate dial on black lather strap. Since it was my first time seeing it in person, I got closer and commented on how nice his Daytona was... He looked as if he had no clue what I was talking about and replied "it's a Rolex, my wife bought it for me"... I politely smiled and walked away

LOL. Most owners don’t know what’s their model.

I’m in a condo community in SW Florida mostly retirees, 10-15 meet for coffee every morning, always a handful of DJs and day-dates all older ones. The guys have no clue what model, most were given to them as retirement or sales incentives years ago.

This happens more often than you would think...I was admiring a guys beautiful blue Royal Oak, with my son (my sons grail watch), in line at Nordstrom Rack and I said to there guy “nice Royal Oak”...he looked at me like I head three heads!
After we got through that, he was super cool and he even let my son try it on his wrist! |

The only time I ever really had a "moment" beyond the "What kind of watch is that?" or "Nice watch!" is when an oral surgeon pointed to my wrist and said he had an older Submariner that was his daily wearer, but was currently being serviced after the crystal became suspiciously foggy while he was snorkeling on vacation several months ago.
I was all excited to talk Subs with him - but then the anesthetic kicked in and I was out :) Just a few weeks ago, I was at a private dining event at a restaurant and this guy sitting across from me didn't say a word, just put his wrist up next to mine, which was a bit awkward. But turns out he was comparing the size of our watches. No idea what model his was - I just told him I could never wear a watch as big as his because my arms are too skinny. And that was that. |

A few years ago, I attended the re-opening of our yacht club after extensive renovations, and the after dinner speaker was now deceased Derek Hatfield, not exactly a household name in non boating circles. Hatfield was a retired RCMP Officer, and one of those rare breed of sailors (or certified nutbars, depending on your view ) who race big sailboats around the world singlehanded. He did the Around Alone race in 2002-03, finishing 1st in fleet, and was named Rolex Canadian Sailor of the Year, 2004-05 Vendee Globe (retired, broken mast), the 2101-11 Velux 5 Oceans (3rd).
After his slide and video presentation, I chatted with him and asked the burning question, "Which model watch did Rolex give you?" He looked down at his wrist which was sporting a magnificently beat up Casio digital, and said "I'm not sure, but I don't think it was a really expensive one. I wear it sometimes." I guess that when you're alone off the coast of Antarctica, battling 80 mph winds and 50 foot waves, there are other priorities.

This is the exact reason I have learned to keep my mouth shut. I’ve received exactly one comment on my Rolex and it was from my uncle who had inherited a Rolex but knows nothing about watches. 99% of folks out there are oblivious, even if they have a Rolex on their wrist.
The few times I’ve mentioned someone’s watch they were wearing, I’ve gotten blank stares or wide-eyed worry that they were about to be jacked for their watch. Now I just admire in silence. |

That is why I believe only people on here get bent out of shape when someone talks about buying Rolex for "status."
The other 99% of Rolex owners out there buy them exactly because they ARE a status symbol. Model and reference? Minor details, no care. |

Most folks buy what they like and really don't care about brand/model of the product. They buy on a good reputation of the product. We, on the other hand, are rabid dogs when it comes to watches. I must admit that I'm also a rabid dog about cars. Have been since I was 13 years old (it was 1957 if you must know ).

Most of the women I know who have Cartiers and Chanels don't know the models or dont remember them after a few months, pretty common amongst non-obsessives.

I bet more people don't know the model number of their rolex than people who actually do! Maybe they know the name... but it does not surprise me at all that some don't!

I was on vacation and asked a younger guy to take a photo for us. I noticed he had a older dj and I was wearing mine so I said “thanks, and nice dj”. The guy looked super confused so I just walked away.
But yea, most people aren’t enthusiasts so doesn’t surprise me that they have no idea what model they own.

Outside TRF ... alot of Rolex owners have no idea what model they have.
They walk into an AD, they pick something they like from the display case and buy it. I said nice Daytona to someone. He said "what" back to me. I said "what" back to him. We both pretended we were talking to the wrong person and moved on. |
