It depends on what you are doing at the gym.

if you're a treadmill person, then no problem with a watch at the gym. I tend to use a lot of free weights including kettlebells, and one KB snatch and my crystal would be smashed....so no watch at the gym for me.

I would be concerned I would grind my watch against a steel frame or bar bell. Generally the gym equipment wins the fight with any watch. If you do not bang the watch, its fine in the gym. Never leave it in a locker or take it off while there. No good outcome off your wrist in a public place.

Because they don’t want to needlessly scratch or bang them up. Thought that was self evident, as Captain Obvious would say.

Try to deadlift weights off the ground with a watch on and straps to your wrist and see how functional a watch is.

Watch and heavy weights don't go hand in hand. A watch and cardio is fine.

Not much about damage, but rolex feels like a piece of jewelry in the gym. I just see no usecase for the classical watch there. I do wear my garmin to check the pulse and recovery speed though.

I understand why you might think that wearing the watch is safer than keeping it in the locker... well, you can always leave it at home then. Pumping iron with a rolex is just too gangsta for me:))

I guess it depends what type of gym you go to. If you are going to a weight room to bench press and do squats and wear a Rolex you are getting made fun of. If you run on a treadmill or stationary bike I guess you could wear it.

Damage or theft are the 2 most common risks at a gym. Gyms have clocks so a watch is an unnecessary device.

Great.. you just opened a can of worms ‘Is it safe’. Some will urge you that all that violent arm swinging is bad for the watch.

But isn't it risky though? There's is a possibility of getting a scratch from the arm swinging.

It's like trying to race with my sports car. It's built and efficient for that but I won't want to risk it because I treasure it.

I wear my Deep Sea to the gym.

The glide lock means I can adjust it instantly if it gets tight, and I feel it's safer on my wrist than in the locker.

The only time I don't wear it is if I am doing a chest press using dumbbells, as I find the watch can rub against the weight if my wrist fails to keep the weight completely horizontal. But for all other exercises, from bar bell press to dead lifts, I have never had the watch come in contact with whatever I am lifting.

I wear my Fitbit Charge 3 to the gym - my Tudor and Omega can’t tell me what my heart rate is and how many calories I’ve burnt. Also I’m more bothered about seeing that I’ve achieved a good work out than people seeing I have nice watches!

I wear my Rolex to the Gym. Never been a problem. I take it into the gym shower with me after my workout and rinse the sweat off and it's good as new.

One reason I buy Rolex instead of other "luxury" brands is that they are built to be tough. Still "tool" watches despite the high prices. Life is too short to spend it babying a possession. "Wear the watch, don't let it wear you". Or to be more general "Own things don't let things own you".

I've been training seriously way to long to know that accidents happen. Not willing to damage any of my watches because I cant stand taking it off for an hour or two during the day. I'll wear my sub to snowboard, swim, cycle, or hike but absolutely never near the heavy weights.
