Engravings done by Patek
Would a name engraved on a 1938 ref. 96 steel done by Patek at the factory and listed in the extract from the archives negatively impact on the value? I know engravings usually aren't a good thing but if its been carried out by Patek and therefore is the watches original state is this still the case?

I would assume unless its done for someone famous, nobody really wants "to John Smith" on their watch. But considering its such an old watch, maybe it won't matter much if at all.

It wouldn't to me. If I wanted a steel 96 Calatrava, it being engraved wouldn't matter value wise.

It's an interesting question to ask vintage Patek collectors, who are quite different from modern Patek collectors or even vintage Rolex collectors.
If I were to decide on whether to purchase a watch with personal engravings on it, I don't think it matters whether Patek did it or an outisre engraver did it. Either way, for me, it would be less desirable than one without engravings. |
