An alert
I have just been notified by another member that someone has hacked my username, and used it to perpetrate a fraud. He tells me that someone identifying himself as cdog responded to a WTB ad of his, that he sent cdog a PM on this forum asking to confirm email address, and this individual was able to respond to it and provided an email address that isn't mine. How this person was able to intercept a PM sent from one member to another is beyond me. I never received a PM from the other member, and have checked and my PM system seems to be working perfectly. The long and the short of it is the other member is out a significant amount of money, having wired funds to the scammer, who identified himself as Charles Reed, by sending him a picture of what now appears to him to have been a photoshopped passport. Passport shows residence in Florida and DOB 21 Oct 65. The only item that I currently have posted for sale are some custom end links. I've notified the moderator of this incident.

Bit late for a heads up. Someone is out a "significant amount of money" because you gave away your details to a phishing scam. When this happens we ban the accoount as a precaution to stop further scams with the same account. The scammer may have access still to your account. You will need to contact Lol-x with a temporary account to organise re-instatement.
Edit: Welcome back.

All true, but the OP didn't open any phishing email, or click a link. OP only got notified about the scam by the scammed buyer. You said OP gave away details in a scam. I was only saying, that in this case, it doesn't appear to me that he did....if I'm not mistaken.

Did the OP's account ACTUALLY get hacked or was it duplicated like cd0g or cdog1 ? That is WAY more common than actual account hacks; which still do happen but not as much.

I'm guessing since Adam came on and stated he gave away his info to a phishing scam, he clicked on a dummy link... Would be nice to hear from the OP to clear that up.

Upon looking back at my email history re: the items I have posted for sale, I did click on a link asking me to verify the items for sale, however neither did it opened up nor was I asked to verify or provide any personal information. Such a request would have been an obvious red flag. If there is some way a scammer can obtain a password and user name confirmation from just a click on a dummy link on a email, then that, unfortunately, is what occurred.

Have you updated your antivirus/malware security and run full scans? If you dont recall physically entering a password/username, you could have a virus/keylogger on your phone/computer.

I believe the same guy tried to scam me this week on my WTB post using CDog’s name.
Thanks to a heads up from another forum member I didn’t bite. The email address he used to contact me is dmgreen.11@aol.com |

Just clicking on a link can cause malware to be downloaded to your computer. Malware can result in your stored information (username and passwords) kept in bookmarks to be stolen by a scammer.
NEVER click on any links sent to you or posted in emails, PM's or anywhere else.

Agree with that advice about never clicking on links sent to you. Even if it is from a source you previously trusted. Also adding one bit of info - malware doesn’t only rely on siphoning stored info. Since the advent of encrypted password lockers, most malware now includes a segment of code that installs and collects live data. It logs keystrokes, cookies and website data - then packages it for transmission to the perpetrator. There is no day zero protection for new malware - it isn’t a virus, doesn’t have a signature and looks like a perfectly legit bit of executable code. So, like Steve said, just don’t click. Any such PM with a dodgy looking link is someone looking for your password.
Take every opportunity to warn anyone you encounter not to click these links.
