Fell back in love with my Speedy

My Speedmaster is a transitional drop R model from about 1990. It was the first "old" watch I ever purchased and it was also the first "expensive" (say worth above $1000 or so) watch I ever purchased many years ago. Lifestyle and taste creep has got me buying gold GMTs and looking at APs and I actually put the speedy away and honestly wore it almost never for a good year or two.

I picked it up a month ago and found the mainspring had failed. So I sent it off to Al Archer for servicing with the idea that when it was up and going again Id sell it and hunt for something new.

When it comes back its running marvelously and I throw it back on its original bracelet (I had been wearing it on NATOs when I did wear it).

And BAM. Back in love again. Is there a design anymore timeless than the Speedmaster Professional? The Submariner has changed far more than the Speedy Pro in the last 50 years in terms of design and materials. Omega is still making a hesalite crystal, solid back Speedy and they've been doing it for decades and decades.

I honestly think everyone needs a Speedy. Daytona what? This thing is truly timeless and the way the dial and crystal pop in the sunlight is unlike anything else.

That's my little rant and story. And if anyone needs omega servicing in Canada please send your watches to Al Jensky at Archer Watches. Cannot say enough good things about him. With every service he sends over a 50-70 page PDF report full of photos and customized description of your servicing. It's next level.

Have a good weekend everyone.

Looks so good! Thanks for sharing your story. Speedmaster pro is on my (long) wishlist, but your loving post maybe brought it uo a place or two :)

My 3590.50 on the same bracelet says hello! I got mine about 3 weeks ago or so, and just had the spring bars removed (they were jammed in there), finally allowing me to try it out with a couple straps.

NOPE. I realized that this watch is best on this bracelet. It's definitely an amazing watch for not a ton of money, especially if you're looking for the tritium look like I was.

What’s not to love??? Finding a watch that “clicks” with its owner is what it’s all about. Unfortunately too many will never reach that level of joy as they never keep a watch long enough or are too worried about damaging it to ever relax.

No kidding. I have a colleague a few years below me who is new in the watch game. He bought a Speedy a couple months ago as his first choice which was great. He also owns a crappy Invicta he wears to not be too flashy when he's at work and he told me he's considering selling his speedy because he's afraid of wearing it and he "gets more compliments" with the Invicta. I told him he needs to figure out what he likes and not wear watches for anyone else! They're just things meant to be used and enjoyed.

I'm glad I fell back in love with my speedy. It's fun rediscovering these things and watching my tastes ebb and flow.

Great read and nice watch! I have had one in my collection about a week and can't stop wearing it. There is just something about it, these may be famous last words but I can't see selling it again.

I always smile when I return the Speedy to the wrist. I love that it is absolutely stunning on the bracelet and yet can easily be thrown on a strap or band. I do own the Daytona and I can attest that I put the Speedy on more than the Rolex. With all of this "Rolex SS Hype," it is a shame that the Omega does not get more love - especially the Speedmaster. Maybe they are put off by the size? Not "exclusive" enough?

Either way, I am glad we all enjoy ours and know the true value of the piece.

I had mine on a vintage style strap for a change over the last couple of years and wore it every once in a while. A few weeks ago I put the bracelet back on and I too fell in love again. It still is not one of my top wearers, but I put it one much more than before. So I hear you brother, love the Speedy!

I put my speedy on the bracelet sometimes but I prefer to wear it on a NATO most of the time. Straps just compliment those lyre lugs so well

Glad to hear you feel back in love with your speedy
