9 years US Army. Proud to have served.

As another member said above, I'm glad it's an all volunteer force in the US, but I wish more would serve.

My BMW dealer was booked. I had an appointment for this morning but was afraid to even take the kids to school in this weather given the Pirelli Pzeros on the X6 renders it fairly useless in this weather.
Ran out to Canadian Tire yesterday and bought a jack. Switched them myself yesterday before the snow.
Not gonna lie...those things are a lot heavier then the old days. That's why they make Advil!

Not to niggle, but I see this every year.

Veterans Day is to honor those living who have served. Memorial Day is honor the fallen. These two holidays are meant to commemorate different groups, but people conflate the meaning of the holidays. And Armed Forces Day is to honor those currently serving in the military.

Thank you, Veterans!

My wife and I are in Prescott, Arizona this week. We went downtown and took in the Veterans Day parade, and it was quite the event. At 2 hours long it was the most substantial parade I have ever been to, and there was a lot of emotion conveyed. Amazing experience.

although a day for all lost soldiers, and the cause they gave their lives for, the poppy and rememberance day was instituted after the first world war and its anthem, at least in my heart is John McCrae's "In Flanders Fields"

In Flanders fields the poppies blow
Between the crosses, row on row,
That mark our place; and in the sky
The larks, still bravely singing, fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below.

We are the Dead. Short days ago
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
Loved and were loved, and now we lie
In Flanders fields.

Take up our quarrel with the foe:
To you from failing hands we throw
The torch; be yours to hold it high.
If ye break faith with us who die
We shall not sleep, though poppies grow
In Flanders fields.

A peom inspired and then penned in 1915 by the poppies that sprouted up (as they do) around the freshly tilled and excavated soil of burial graves for the fallen.

Don Cherry, a Canadian athlete and sports personality just lost his job for speaking out against newcomers to the country casting aside rememberance day and ignoring the custom of wearing poppies to honour those that gave their lives for the ideals we now hold so dear.

it's truely a new age.

We are a country of immigrants and thankfully Don Cherry doesn’t speak for us all

It is in the US, but in other countries, such as mine it remembers the fallen and is called Remembrance day. It would have been "splitting hairs" to start a separate thread.

Impressive, and humbling. My family history is similar. Where was your grandfather a POW? My great aunt was an Army nurse who survived the Bataan Death March and ~3 years in captivity on Corregidor. She went on to serve another 27 years after her release.

My grandfather, a Filipino, was captured in Mindinao. He immigrated immediately following the war....then joined the U.S Army. He was the meanest man you will ever meet at 5’2” tall. The only time he showed any emotion is when he’d talk about the friends he had lost during the war. The three Marine brothers I listed there (volunteers, not draftees), were three of his four sons. It was tough growing up around that household.
