Apple Watch 3

Any of you have experience (favorable or unfavorable) with the Apple Watch 3?

Now that it has been replaced with the Apple Watch 4, Amazon will have it on sale for Prime Day next month.

My wife's Fitbit is acting up and I need a beater watch / fitness tracker for working out, hiking, biking, etc. I'm using a Suunto Vector as my beater now but it is old and pretty beaten.

The Apple Watch won't replace my mechanical watches for daily wear.

But the Apple Watch 3 seems to fit the bill for a fitness tracker when I don't want to damage a nice watch. If it works reliably as advertised.

On sale, for only $199 for the 38mm and $229 for the 42mm.

I've just bought a new GPS-only Series 4 40mm and my wife has had the older cellular Series 3 38mm for a 18 months. I've seen no particular performance differences between the two, except that the cellular sucks battery life much more quickly. I was considering the older model, but because of the screen size increase in the Series 4, I would have had to go the older 42mm, and I preferred the smaller for my wrist size. The other aspect is that Apple tend to "retire" older versions with subsequent major OS updates. So while the Series 3 will get the WatchOS 6, it's life (or upgrade capacity) may run out with version 7 or 8, while the Series 4 will keep going for a few years more.
