Hello and my first vintage Rolex
Greetings! I have been reading the forum for a while and have tried to learn as much as I can. So first, a thank you to all who contribute to the collective knowledge base.
I had a 16610 but sold it to fund my first vintage piece last year and have been enjoying it ever since. It came from the original owner and I wanted to share it with you all to get your thoughts. Oops can’t post images just yet :( |

And now that I can post pictures, here goes...
Yes, 5513 with caseback stamped IV71 with a 3.5mil serial number. The C&I rivet is marked I73. So I’m guessing it’s from 1973. What do you all think about the overall watch? I want to send the case to LWW to have it polished right and the bracelet to MY to have it tightened and lightly polished. |

Beautiful example..personally, I wouldn’t do anything to it, besides have it pressure tested and make sure the movement is clean..I would leave the case alone as well as the C&I rivet- from the pics it looks as though it is in damn good condition although I can’t say for certain..congrats on picking that beauty up...it’s a keeper for sure

Thanks DJ24 and Urosfan!
I really like the fact that it is as found and looks the part. That is how an honest 45 year old sub should look. However, a part of me would like to take the case back to its former glory. Really now the case is soft; I want to bring back the lines. And if I do that, might as well have the bracelet refurbed as well. Decisions, decisions... |

Personally because the watch has no sentimental value, I would get them to clean it up a little, not polish it back to original condition but just clean it all up and lightly polish it.

Update: watch head at LAWW and bracelet is with MY. The wait is agonizing and I must admit I am a bit anxious about the end result. But both are the best at what they do so I trust all will be well :)

LAWW worked on my 5513 and, er, it now appears to be a new watch. The work is not cheap but the results amazing...I bought that 5513 as a "beater", a daily, I just bought the cheapest one Jacek had on hand the day I went looking, because I wanted a Sub (this was back when you could get one for 3200 like I paid). Now I'm afraid to scratch it!

Thanks for the kind comments guys. Makes me miss it even more.
Nope, just correct the geometry of the case. LAWW told me that they do not laser weld unless there is damage or dents needing spot repair.

Greetings everybody!
Thought I would follow up my post with the results from the work done by LAWW and MY. I sent the watch head to be polished properly and upon dismantling the case, the crystal was found to be crazed around the edge. Impossible to say if it came originally with the watch but it is a 19 dome. Though I was keen to keep the original 19 dome, it would not hold pressure. So decided to have it replaced with a service crystal that LAWW reprofile. But it wasn’t matching how the original looked. LAWW was gracious enough to send me pictures along the way. This is with the original 19 dome installed And this is the reprofiled service crystal The service crystal just didn’t look right so I asked for a higher profile 39 superdome. It was much better IMHO and the decision was made. Here is how it looks and also the polish work from LAWW MY also did great work on refurbishing the C&I rivet Great to have it back on the wrist and thanks to LAWW and MY for the great work. Thats a fantastic looking watch. What a difference to the case, i can see now when people point mention a soft case. What fantastic before and after pictures, looks real sharp.
Well done and wear it well. |
