A.Lange & Söhne Lange 1 Moonphase

Hi all

I have owned this for nearly 2 weeks now and thought I would do a review of this timepiece which I hope you will find useful and enjoy.

Reference: 109.032 Rose Gold

Firstly a couple of pictures:

I will now go through the key parts of this timepiece before giving a final rating.

Dial

Asymmetrical dial containing solid gold appliqués displaying the time, seconds, date, power reserve and Moonphase. Displays the information effortlessly, the dial is made of solid silver and the hours, minute and power reserve hands have lume. There are also lume markers on the time ring, power reserve.

Verdict: Perfect, the dial is legible and spectacularly finished.

Date:

Has the outsize date feature which can be adjusted by the push piece which is beautifully rounded to not detract from the case's beauty. Very legible in a great bold font. A negative is not an instant date change but happens gradually.

Verdict: Best date feature compared to any timepiece although will benefit from a new movement thus making the date change instantaneously at midnight.

Power reserve:

This timepiece has a double barrel leading to a 72 hours power reserve but can actually go to about 100 hours (likely to have a loss of accuracy at this point). The power reserve indicator is handy and is well positioned arcing the circumference of the dial also with lume markers.

Verdict:

Impressive power reserve and well indicated on the dial.

Moonphase:

A solid gold disc forms the Moonphase. A patented process achieves the dazzling blue which contrasts wonderfully against the gold moon and stars. Moves continuously and accurate to around 122.6 years once set and wound. Perfectly positioned within the seconds function - just looks and feels right.

Verdict: Adds a bit of poetry and a dash of colour - great.

Case:

38.5 mm size is perfection for a watch of this type and should suit most wrists. At 10.4 mm thick it is also relatively slim considering the degree of complications. The bezel is nice and thick giving it a lovely presence. The lugs are wonderfully crafted and add style to the piece. The crown is signed and solid.

Movement:

L901.5 is finished to an immaculate standard with nine gold screwed chatons and hand engraved balance cock. The 3/4 plate forms part of the traditional German movement. So far very accurate.

Verdict: Impressive, probably the best finished movement at the price point.

Tang/buckle:

Solid gold and signed "LANGE". Very well formed with a solid feel with a streamlined design.

Verdict: Perfect - compliments the case well and feels secure.

Strap:

Wonderfully crafted hand stitched alligator with a rounded end. A slight shine compliments the case well.

Verdict:

Perfect and should last a few years, also comfortable straight out the box.

Comfort:

The size of the case together with the strap make this a very comfortable piece and the precious metal gives it the desirable heft.

Verdict: Perfect.

Overall Verdict: An exceptional timepiece which is likely to bring joy to many generations. In my view this timepiece is unparalleled by any other timepiece and gets a perfect score 10/10.

Cheers
Anuj

Very nice review! Did you try on the platinum version? Thinking about the platinum MP and wanted to hear your opinion. Thanks!

Thanks - I did, it's just not as warm or as in inviting as the rose gold version. It was also much heavier as expected and the price also put me off

The silver dial goes well with the rose gold but is a bit dull with the platinum case and I like in my version the moon and stars are also rose gold.

I completely agree. I like the platinum version cause it is more under the radar but the rhodie dial seem dull at some angles. Thanks!

Thanks for this review, I have seen this beauty on other thread and it definitely made a remark amongst other A Lange Sohne watches as well

What a nice review and that lange looks perfect on your wrist.. but too bad i'm not into dress watches..

But i wonder why would they use a solid silver for the dial instead of solid gold...??

And the platinum version would indeed been under the radar but as most people around the world knows that as indians we love gold..!! Maybe that's why the op chose the rose gold version over the platinum version..

I think the original has a better balanced dial and the size is perfect for a dress watch. By all means try both on.

Either design is superb. Here is mine. The photo makes the face look like an off white but in real life I think it is best described as an icy gray. Be sure to check out of the official launch video as well at http://youtu.be/qmJB0S5fq2U.
