Is this a good deal?

I’ve been one to say don’t pay high grey premiums. But my hunt for a 116500 white dial has let me to entertain the though of at least trades. I now have the opportunity to get a used (and polished once with a cape cod cloth) white dial 116500 with box, papers, and late 2019 card as a trade for a couple pieces which cost me around $18000 at MSRP. So, I’m essentially getting a white dial SS Daytona for $18,000. Even if the market cools, I’m not sure if I’d be able to do better grey than roughly $4,000 over MSRP plus tax. Thanks for the advice.

I'd say yes in today's market.

What are the other pieces you’re trading?

Value wise it’s not too bad, although I’m not a fan of trading one watch to get another so trading two blows my mind

I’d want to inspect anything that has been cape cod polished, there’s a lot of room for interpretation there

If the watch is in good condition and it is what you want then go for it. I want a good deal but will typically be fine with a fair deal and this is moving toward a good deal. The market is what it is and I don't see the SS Daytona-C's being readily available anytime soon so you will be fine on the price.

It’s a great deal based on gray market prices. Will it always be a good deal? Hard to say.

A year old piece should not need polished unless it was in bad shape. It must be cheap for a reason. Be patient and let them come down a bit and trade for one BNIB

Do you have any pictures of the 116500? Just to ensure that its not butchered

Agreed. We all know price and condition go hand in hand. When you overlay the fact that you are giving up other watches for it, I would pass

I think you should get it... All these people saying "wait for the price to come down" haven't realized they've only been going up.

If you want it, get it. Life is too short.

Thanks all. For those asking about the trade pieces, it’s a 2019 oyster BLNR, which hardly ever sees wrist time, and a 2019 sub date, heavily worn. I would physically inspect the Daytona in person before the trade, and it looks excellent from the pictures the seller sent (he is making a video later today).

Exactly. The phrase "polished with a Cape Cod" is ringing all sorts of alarm bells in my mind. Proceed with caution, my friend.

Not a bad trade monetarily, depending on condition of course. But if you’re trading those two, and it’ll be the only watch you have left...I wouldn’t do that trade

Thanks for the feedback, Richard. And thank you to everyone who has replied to my inquiry. I'm expecting a BLRO in the next several months, so I think the 116500 and BLRO on rotation would be a great combo. One of my hang ups is while I can easily get another Sub, I wore this one during my first full Ironman (I see your avatar ) so it has some sentimental value. But as you say, not a bad trade monetarily, and if it is in excellent condition, this may be a logical next chapter to my story.

If the BLRO is coming for sure, and you’ll love having a Daytona...I’d go for it. Congrats on the Ironman

Who did the polishing ? An amateur can ruin a watch with a cape cod. Unless you can see it in person, I wouldn't buy it sight unseen.

Is this a good deal?

You have a couple of SS models and you’re getting the BLRO soon - can I assume you’ve got a AD who’s looking out for you? Why not give them time to land you a Daytona. It’s tough but it’s not impossible.

I wouldn’t part with a piece which has sentimental value. Or the BLNR. To get a piece that’s not new and could have a problematic past.

The Daytona trade is not bad monetarily if and only if the 116500 is spot on perfect. I would shop around and make sure I was getting the most I could out of the BLNR and Sub I would think they would trade for more in this market especially the BLNR.

If your dealer will supply you a BLRO they will also supply you a Daytona, I would go that route.
That said DaytonaC’s will not drop below $18K so you would be safe there.

I agree with this ...

But , if the Daytona C is in pristine condition
Upon inspection it could be a decent swap .
Or you could sell both outright and then decide.

I would be cautious here, why would it need polish if it's a 2019 purchase?

Every used recent watch you see here for sale has been touched up, pretty common for the resellers. Everyone says they don’t want it polished but they also expect it to look like new.

Regardless of what you paid for them, market value on your 2 watches is closer to 22-23k. I would consider selling them privately and then shop for the Daytona.

I'd have no issue here - even if it was polished with a cap cod it could easily be fixed if any issue. Make the deal! Deal seems on point for me -

Right, the market value is around $22,500 for both of them. I have another opportunity to pay $750 with the trade and get an unworn (stickers removed), white 116500 purchased in 2020, as the seller is looking to part with it for around $23,250-23,500. I'm almost wondering if its worth the extra $750 for an unworn piece.
