anyone one else intimidated??
i find the thought of going into an AD intimidating, like im moving up the class ladder. i don't dress (most of the time) like i belong in there and the security guard and 'posh' salesman mentally bother me. i live in vancouver close to 3 AD's and can't get the courage to go inside... now im an AD stalker/lurker. anyways has anyone gone to a vancouver shop and would recommend a salesman? looking at the explorer btw

Let me start by saying you should never, NEVER let anyone at an AD intimidate you...they're working for YOUR money. The sales staff that work there...well, they WORK there to help you. I'm sure someone will be along any minute with more info for a good AD in your area... |

The salesperson probably deserved it. Funny how these people WORK at AD's and they act like they own the place...

I always take the view that I'm dealing with someone who works in a retail outlet and I'm the one with the means to acquire the watch.
I am polite and respectful to them and expect them to be the same in return and that's the way it always turns out.

Can't help you with an AD in your area but I can welcome you to TRF! You'll enjoy learning about Rolex watches with this nice group of folks.
Let me help you with the intimidation factor too! The sales people are folks just like you. Many of them work there because they like the watches and many of them are just there for a job; that of serving you! YOU are their reason for existence. Do not feel intimidated by the sales staff or the ambience of the store. They're only there to supply you and other customers with an expensive watch!! |

I never get intimidated going to an AD. You are the buyer and a potential customer. If they treat you snooty, walk and go to another one !

I landscape for a living, and bought my Explorer on my lunch break, after doing a planting in a light drizzle. MUDDY!
I wore the watch right out of the store! |

Serious. You shouldnt allow anyone to intimidate you. A salesman at a Rolex dealer, pretty girl, or anyone else. Treat the salesman like you would the waitress at Perkins. With respect. End of story. |

Bill, never be intimidated. Like the guys say..you are the one they have to impress.
Also, being on this forum, you're already leagues ahead of the average shopper at an AD who has little watch knowledge and just wants "a Rolex". If you have a salesperson who loves his/her job, then they will appreciate your knowledge and passion. I will often just go into the AD to chat about watches, it's so rare to find people (other than in cyberspace) who are members of the club.. If you've got three ADs near by then you have good odds...go in, ask an intelligent and specific question about a model, and gauge their response...If they light up this is where you want to spend your money.. |

Bill, Man-Up! Stand up staight, walk in and zero in on the prettiest sales girl they got, look her in the eye, smile sweetly and ask if she can help you!
If all they got are guys, then turn on your best steely gaze and ask in loud clear voice: "Aright! Which one of you hairy legs is gonna help me with a new Rolex Explorer wristwatch! Remember, you are the Man with the Money! Go get'em! |

Welcome to the forum.
You will learn plenty about the Exp here. I know what you mean about the atmosphere in an AD and the sinister looking security guards. However the security guys are often ex service men. There good guys, there to protect you also. Regarding the AD staff. You do get some who appear a bit stuck up but most are regular people and have always treated me politely. If they think you have a pocket full of money they will treat you fine. Being knowledgable about the product will give you more confidence. Good luck. |

the simple rule:
Treat people with respect and they will do the same...if not,,, then take your business elsewhere, but still act like the gentleman that you are...

I live in Silicon Valley. The land of millionaires in worn out jeans and cheap sneakers.
If you sell expensive things in this valley, watches, cars, real-estate, used electron microscopes (almost bought one for the fun of it once), you just don't take the chance of getting snobby and offending someone. |

I like my AD, although I don't go there often. When I do, though, the only thing that intimidates me is the fact that want my Explorer and are not in the least bit shy about it.
Of course, they want in trade, but they want it nonetheless. Maybe they were expecting the new Explorer, even before those here were. |

Agreed with much of the sentiment here. I actually like to dress down to go to the AD flip flops, baseball hats, etc. My favorite part is when the salesstaff rolls their eyes and I reveal a watch from behind my sleeve that is worth more than their monthly salary. I love watching bad salesmen change their tune after catching a whiff of money.
Buying a Rolex is not like buying a Rolls Royce. While definitely a costly luxury item, watches are an indulgence of many who otherwise live with much more modest means. Any good salesman should know that and not judge the book by its cover. Remember that youre the consumer and that you are "supposed" to be there. Some ADs do have a snobbery sickness but usually there is another local guy ready to pick up the slack. The best is walking by an AD wearing the watch that they blew the sale on earlier. I've never been to BC so I cant help you with a recommendation. Happy hunting! I'm always a gentleman (regardless of how dressed down I am) and take revenge by spending my money elsewhere... |

I drop into a couple of Ad stores in Edinburgh, Scotland from time to time.I find the
salepersons welcoming and friendly. They seem to have plenty of time to chat away with an old guy like me for 5 or 10 minutes and enjoy seeing my modest collection of vintage Rolex ,Tudor and IWC " Treasures " The next time any of you are in town , drop into Watches of Switzerland on Princes St. or Laings on Frederick St. They're nice people. By the way , Ive just ordered one of the new Heritage Tudors. |

After intimately meeting the security guy on my first trip into my favorite AD. I am to the point, after 8-10 visits, that the owner knows which watch I am going to ask for (TT GMTIIC) and pulls it out of the display without my asking. He has become very patient with me and one of these days when I'm ready to wear it home, I will ask him what the price is and reward him.
