New member- need new watch advice!
Hey everyone,
I have been reading fantastic material from this forum for months and figured it's time I join. I have been saving up for my first luxury watch. I'm 16 years old and I have saved up about 3 grand for a watch. I have already considered the future and my college is already paid for, plus I have a car and lots of other money saved up incase of emergencies in college. So 3k-ish to spend. I like the rolex datejust ii, but that is too expensive for me, I am considering saving up a bit more for a 8500 aqua terra. Maybe a planet ocean(a little out of budget)? or maybe a breitling superocean 42( a little below budget). I do scuba dive but only two or three times a year so it doesn't matter wether it's a diver or not. I really want it to be an auto and in new or mint condition. Any suggestions? Thanks guys! |

Welcome to TRF!
With a budget of $3,000, I would be thinking about a well cared for vintage Datejust. You can probably get a nice one with the boxes for that kind of money. Then when you are better situated you can get a tool watch. In the meantime, you still have a Rolex. Just a thought. |

Welcome!
I would suggest bumping your budget to about $3,500. Then you can get a nice two tone or stainless Rolex Datejust. I would look at model numbers 16030 & 16013. |

I was looking on ebay for some vintage date justs, great advice from Frosty btw, and I found a 2009 rolex explorer I that I like a lot. It doesn't have a box or papers but the seller has 100% feedback with over 1000 sales. It is currently at 2300 usd and there is an aparasail for the watch saying it is valued at 3,900. Should I try to go for this one? It looks pretty minty and I actually very much like the look of it and find that it might be a good all around watch until i am older and have a career and can afford nicer stuff?

Welcome, I agree with Frosty. Post some pictures of the watch and do as much homework on the seller before purchasing.
Best of luck

Borrowed pictures, not my own. The Breitling is brand new for about 2,700 with a 3 year warranty, box and papers. The AK i can either get brand new with warranty box and papers for 3,890, or used in mint condition with a lifetime warranty from cape town watches but comes with no box or papers but does come with the hang tags. Any thoughts? If you like the AK, should I consider the blue dial? Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |

Welcome
It's not what we like that matters - it's what will work for you. Try them on locally before buying through the mail with anyone. This avoids buyer's remorse later on... The AK is smaller diameter than many of the other ones you mentioned.

I definantly will go try them on before I make any decisions, my only hesitations on the rolex is the size and the fact that having a new rolex at such a young age my attract un wanted attention! If the size is too small I will go for a 36 mm oyster perpetual and I think when I start work after college I just won't wear it until after my first year. |

I graduated High School @ 17 and parents have me a new Omega as present. Dad was always an Omega fan. Wasn't the top of the line - just a good entry level automatic. Still not bad almost 50 years later...
An AK or OP would be the modern equivalent. So you're not out there on a limb age-wise.

That is a very nice omega you have! That's very good to know that I wouldn't be out there age wise, I like to definantly fly under the radar, especially for the first year at work. I have read places never wear an expensive watch to work your first year. (Even the the OP and AK are rather inexpensive.) but I could wear it for the remainder of high school, college and graduate school, then just not wear it for work for a year. (That will give me an excuse to buy a lesser value watch for work!). I almost have enough saved up for one of the two, hopefully after my summer job, I will pull the trigger. Pics to come(hopefully sooner rather than later!) Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |

I would go Tudor Black Bay all the way. 2800$ BNIB
It's 2800$ brand new in box and its beautiful IMO.
If you're into metal bracelets then its 3200$ for Both leather and metal bracelets. i think that's the best bang for your buck and you'll be the coolest 16 year old around |

welcome to the forum ,,, a dj will last a lifetime , buy carefully and pick a classic dial , or keep saving , personally , in your position id be looking at an explorer 1 , a simple watch that will last and never be in or out of fashion , just a timeless classic , simple stainless tool watch at the right price ,,,, and before someone asks why is it a tool watch , its because it tells the time , thats the job its suited for .
just my thoughts. |

Welcome to the Forum.
I see a nicely used 14060M Submariner in your future at that price point. Buy a DJ when you are old(er). Light on a NATO and (with the lug holes) easy to add the bracelet.
