Instead of agonizing over waiting lists…

Just venture out and find another brand to love! My first Grand Seiko but definitely not my last! I spent some time looking at it under a loupe and comparing it to my 116500, and let’s just say that everything I’ve read about the quality of finishing that GS has is beyond my expectation. There are a lot of excellent watches out there that you can just walk into a store, fall in love with, and take home the same day. Isn’t that what this hobby should really be about?

Very nice, and it even has my initials on the dial!

GS do some stunning watches. Not sure I like the PR indicator on the dials. Looks great on you. Wear it with good health

Excellent watch. GS is one of the brands I am considering buying a watch from as well as OMEGA.

But not before I complete the collection that I hope to attain, I am not greedy, I have a SS DJ41 and want a Sub and a GMT from Rolex and that is it I am then planning to venture into OMEGA and GS.

To be fair it is connected in being put forth as a waiting list alternative, presumably for a Rolex, and in being compared to a Daytona.

Looks nice but doesn’t scratch the itch for Rolex if that’s what you want, IMO.

I hear ‘ya, bro.

Rolex isn’t the only fine watch brand out there. Wrestling through the hype at ADs or paying 2,3, or 4X MSRP at greys isn’t worth it for a lot of fellas.

GS is a fine piece of craftsmanship and Seiko has a fun history.

The general consumer does not want a nice watch, they want a Rolex. Nothing else will do, regardless of the quality offered by competing brands.

yeah, it's a nice watch but it always rubs me the wrong way when people who already own a rolex say others should explore different brands. there's no substitute for a rolex if someone wants their first (for legitimate reasons, not as an investment)

nothing against op though, congrats

True, hence the situation we’re in.

Ironically, I don’t know a single person who never had an interest in watches who’s recently acquired a new Rolex. For all the newbies and neophytes stoking demand, where and who are they?

Most Rolex buyers aren’t looking for nice dress watch on a leather band. That’s why Cellini has done so poorly. The comparison would maybe do better in the Patek section compared to Calatrava.

I get it. I guess since I’ve been buying and wearing Rolex watches since the late 80’s it’s hard to wrap my head around the hype as it exists today. Maybe it’s a good thing though, as I’ve elected to give up the Rolex/PP chase for the time being and find new outlets for my watch interests. It really was fun to do a little research and then have a salesman actually “sell” me a watch based on how it was made and what makes it special, rather than how much it’s worth, or will be worth.

Rolex needs to dump the Cellini name and just call them Rolex, which they are. The Moonphase is a terrific piece that has actually sold quite well, and I’d love to see them expand on that with the right branding.

Exactly. I have bought more watches this year than in years past and none of them were Rolex

it's hard to put in perspective for sure. i got into watches right before everything went crazy (2017) but even then i knew i only wanted a rolex lol. i think it's normal to look elsewhere as your collection grows but a rolex is still a symbol of success to a lot of people that aren't exactly in it for the investment part (although that only helps their decision). it was the same in the 80s/90s and i'm sure those that wanted to celebrate success didn't want to settle for something else, only difference is there weren't crazy premiums back then
