707!

Today, I bowled my first 700 series.

It hasn't been even a month since I told myself it'd never happen.

Whew!

Well, it means that I averaged 235.7 over three games.

It's taken me about six years of lessons and a pretty intense schedule to attain that.

Of course, pros do this about every day, but I'm 67 years old.

For what it's worth, I used a new Storm Code Black ball.

This was my second series with this ball. Last week I used it in a different league for the first time and didn't break 500, so I was really looking to do better.

It's a powerful ball used correctly, but it takes very disciplined hand to stay on a good line.

Yes, I'm happy.

This was a seniors' afternoon league. We play on whatever conditions the lanes are in when we get there. No fresh oil. Sometimes, the lanes are okay and sometimes, they are almost unplayable.

Because of this, we get a discount and pay nine or ten dollars a week, which is a bargain relative to the night leagues that have better and more consistent conditions.

I bowl two afternoon leagues and one night league. Nights and afternoons are both challenging, but in different ways.

Thank you, Angelo!

That 292, unfortunately, is my handicap score, so I can't really brag about that. The handicap score counts for the league, but all awards and bragging rights accrue to the scratch scores, which I underlined in red.

I'll get a '700 Series' patch for today's effort.

Huge Congratulations !!!!!!!
Amazing what a truckload of hard work can achieve.

How do you feel from a physical standpoint? Gotta be like running a 10 K or more. I hope you're not too banged up.

That's great man! I haven't bowled in years. A buddy and I used to go quite frequently. I bowled with a Storm Trauma Response, and scores over 200 always generated lots of excitement.

Well, honestly, I was pooped when it was all over and not as excited as one might expect.

I did brag to my coach and the folks in the pro shop.

For a lot of regular bowlers, a 700 series is not such a big deal, although it's still a very good outing.

For someone my age to do it the first time is a big deal (and for anyone at any age, really), but if bowling teaches anything, it teaches humility.

Today, I had the right ball for the right conditions and made precious few mistakes.

It's funny that I told my coach at my lesson on Friday that I thought the Code Black wouldn't be a good ball for league play because it was too aggressive on my first league night with it.

I did admit that the ball had a tendency to amplify any mistakes with the release, so today, I focused on staying behind the ball and leading with my ring finger straight down the ten board.

That strategy worked very well.

If you're not a bowler, I can't really explain how difficult the sport is or how taxing it can be physically.

It's not a 10k race, but you need near perfect stability, consistency, and mental focus over a 2.5-3.0 hour stretch.

That's some great bowling Grady! I'm thinking, I know, part of those scores can be attributed to the new lean Grady. An extra 50 or 60 lbs takes its toll. Mentally and physically. Great job slim!

Thank you, very much and you're correct.

Actually, losing nearly 80lbs has had a great effect on me physically and has helped my game and my stamina, but it has actually been something that I've had to correct for.

I don't have the 'ballast' that I once had, so the ball can cause some instability in the approach, but also, now that I'm not as round, I can keep the ball nearer my body and stay behind the ball better.

Actually, today's success had much to do with developing a better, more consistent arm swing and release.

Big congrats. I just recently beat my high score, which also happened to be my wife's high score. It was 185 for YEARS. I just upped to 186, with a few friends a couple weeks ago. She was not happy!!
