My inherited Datejust from the 50's

Hello,

I am new to the site, lots of good info here. I just received my grandfathers 18k solid gold DJ from Rolex service. The watch was not working when I got it, sent to Rolex and 3 month later got it back in perfect working condition and replaced the knock off band with a brown alligator Rolex Band. Can anyone give more information on the watch?

Image attached below.

Thanks,
BG

That is an exquisite dial. Does the service tag say it is a 6605? 1030 movement? If so, it would be from around 1956-57 with the movement that replaced the bubbleback. This would be the second generation DJ. You will be handing it to your grandchildren some day.

Fantastic watch. I am (pleasantly) surprised that a Rolex Service Center would work on this. Unless it was a Rolex-approved service (i.e. independent).

Very nice--Have you searched the year and gold DJ's on VRF?? Have not seen one like that with that dial before.

The dial looks fine to me, and original (as far as I can tell from this low-resolution pic). It appears to be a ref. 6605.

Glad you guys enjoy the watch. The service was done at an official Rolex service center. As far as I know everything is original in the watch, it is indeed a 6605, the movement I do not know, but it is not a bubble back. The watch was given to my Grandfather from the Board of Directors at a bank in 1959, it is engraved on the back of the watch. I can't believe how good of shape the watch is for over 50 years old. Here are some more photos

Amazing watch, indeed, and a wonderful heirloom. It has the cal. 1065 movement (which is basically a 1030 with date wheel), the interim successor to the bubbleback movement until the 15XX caliber movements introduced in 1958-59. You should try some new pics without flash, but good indirect ambient lighting, or even outdoors (weather permitting).

My Thunderbird Datejust 6609 has the same movement (and roulette date wheel):

Beautifull!!

This the THE FLAGSHIP of Rolex during the late 50's.

All original dial, hands and propably a roulette date too.

Wear this in health , if properly maintained absolutely suitable for daily wear.
