Sea Dweller crown - fake or gen?
Hi,
First post on here. Just bought a lovely Sea Dweller of 1993 vintage. Special gift to myself and I love it. Anyway, the other day I noticed a sharp edge on the crown. It started to bug me and I ended up peeling off the metallic foil. Now, I'm still in shock here as I didn't expect this but I am left wondering if this is a genuine Rolex crown or a fake. By the way, the vendor has offered to replace the crown free of charge, no quibbles, so it'll get sent off soon. Here are some pics of the problem. Just curious to hear what some of you guys think of this. |

For decades Rolex pressed a shell around a hardened core. This was for the integrity of the threads.
Looking at your very poor photos, it looks like the crown had been ground down until it was very thin and it should have been replaced long ago. Now days the crown is a "mono-bloc" design where the crown shape is machined out of a solid block that is then drilled out and a threaded core is pressed inside.

Thanks for the info.
So, you think this is a genuine crown? See another attached pic, hopefully slightly better quality. |
