Luxury watches are an investment

I think this article settles the debate. When you have the richest people in the world considering it an investment it’s an investment.

Interesting to see watches #3 overall but #1 in Asia and that China sales were up for 2020.

If you understood investment, you’d know how stupid your statement is.

Have to agree perhaps they should re-name TRF to the investment forum.

Really, I’ve got plenty of investments and don’t need an obnoxious idiot like you to tell me what an investment is. Whether I buy watches as an investment is different which I don’t. I buy them cause I love them but that doesn’t mean the right watches can’t be an investment, hobby, passion all in one. You of course are entitled to your own opinion.

I guess to some on here buying something, and sometime down the road selling that thing for a profit isn’t an investment lol

Guess you’re not investing if you’re not putting money into real estate at all time highs. Or ETFs.

Clearly certain watches are good investments lmao

I have been saying this for quite some time Peter, very few here want to actually talk about watches

There was recently a thread where this could have been posted

OP is right. Based on the common definition of investment, below, the vast majority of people on TRF and buying high-end watches and like goods, consider them as investments, or at the very least, merging their passion with investment strategies. I think that’s intuitively obvious to even a casual observer of this market over the past 10+ years.

Luxury watches are an investment

From another thread I posted couple of days back (in the open discussion forum)

https://www.rolexforums.com/showthread.php?p=11332903

Passion investments, watches seem to be the rage in Asia at least.

And everytime I ask this question, no one will answer.

If it is an investment, when will you sell, how much are you looking to make?

My 5711 is not an investment, it is a watch that I enjoy wearing. The capital was used and was never expected to be returned.

My 116506 wasn’t either but at the prices it’s going for today I’m strongly considering selling.

I hope to make As much as I can. Just like when I sell any other investment like real estate, bonds, equities, collectible vinyl, etc.

Agree. When can we stop this madness on TRF?? I thought we have a TRF rule on this investment talk? If you NEED a watch to be a investment, you really can’t afford a luxury watch in the first place.

Mods, let’s start enforcing this:

iv) THIS IS A ROLEX WATCH DISCUSSION FORUM AND NOT A PRICE OR INVESTMENT OR DISCOUNT DISCUSSION FORUM SO IF YOU HAVE A QUERY REGARDING PRICES, INVESTMENTS OR DISCOUNTS THEN MAKE YOUR OWN PERSONAL ENQUIRIES AND INVESTIGATIONS AND DO NOT POST THOSE ISSUES HERE.

So no actual plan? No goal? No thought as to where to redeploy the capital into the next idea?

Got it.

So have you reached your goal? The price has reached your selling point? Did you get the rate of return you were looking for? What wil you use the capital for next?

OP is completely right. There isn’t anything wrong about it either though. It is what Govberg is citing as a reason for the demand on Rolex. People know if they buy a Rolex and after a few years don’t want it, they can sell and make a little money. Also, Rolex is considered currency in some places. Lastly, look at the watches selling on the Rolex Forums, people who got say the Hulk at retail and now selling it for $10k or more above the retail.

I'm curious on how the data is collated? For sure, the purchasing of premium watches is much more common in Asia than Europe/USA but how to they determine if the watch was bought solely for the purpose of investment?

There are just too many unknowns/variables in the report statistics from KF to enable the article from zeroghedge to throw an accurate eye on the investment trends of different countries.

Take it as a view point and not data that is set in stone.

Completely agree, these threads have no place on this sub forum.

Create a rumor/investment sub forum and let those who believe this scheme have at it.

No one will answer because the question makes no sense. When you go into the make up of your IRA, do you tell yourself I am going to sell my Vanguard Large Cap when I am up 10 basis points?

Lol. Your question was “how much are you looking to make?” Now you’re asking how do watches fit into a broader investment strategy, ‘deploy’ (nice $.02 word ), etc. You’ll have to ask my kids after I die — in 25+ years of collecting, I’ve sold only 1 watch. Ive just bought and bought and bought and bought and bought and bought and bought as I merge passion with investment.
