Our Australia and New Zealand trip in March, 2020 got KO’d by covid, but we are happy to have avoided covid, are in process of vaccinating and we shall get there.

It would be difficult to find things on your own unless you were familiar with Japan and/or speak Japanese.

We prefer doing things on our own and we did have opportunities, but for your first time, tours are a good use of your time. They take you to multiple good sites. You would have to do an incredible amount of legwork to figure out what to see. Tokyo, Osaka and Kyoto are great. Hidden gem: Kanazawa on the west coast. Nagasaki, too.

We found Japan to be absolutely fascinating. They have a deep and rich culture and it is so different from Western cultures. A lot to learn!

Thank you for this and I think you're right, for a newbie to the culture guide tours are probably the way to go.

Appreciate the insight

I just love this place. 20 years renting the same apartment. Easy to understand when you have this view.

I been to Chernobyl about 2 months ago and is hard to put in words all that you can feel and think when visiting that place. At same time it's exciting and very sad. It's not romanticized at all, you'll see a video during the drive about the disaster unfolding and then be taken to a few places in the zone and hear stories about the sudden evacuation. I'd highly recommend to visit pripyat (ghost town). What I would really like to recommend if anyone goes there, to study and learn about what happened and the human side of the disaster.

We have a second home in Atami, and spend up to 2 weeks out of the year there. That is until life was suspended.

Safari is on the agenda for our family sometime in the next 3-4 years. Will definitely check out!

HBO did a limited series about Chernobyl two years ago. They did a really good job. It was shocking to see how so much of this played out in complete secrecy and even when the radiation clouds were blowing over into Finland and Sweden they still tried to downplay it to the UN.

Palau! Best drift dives in the world. For culture and history, it’s hard to beat Egypt or Istanbul. Food in Japan has been incredible. Best beaches Zanzibar and Seychelles. Surprised no one mentioned Paris or French Rivera, lots of great culture and food there too.

Hoping to visit Lake Como next year for concours, Spain and Morocco.

Too many places to list, and I love the big destinations in France and Italy, but the Swiss and French Alps are just spectacular.

Having lived and traveled extensively all over Europe, I would consider Chamonix, France or Annecy, France to be some of my favorites. Chamonix has so much hiking and outdoor activities in the summer and the skiing is awesome in the winter. The views of the Alps are among the best in Europe, in my opinion, although it is fun to see Mont Blanc from the other sides, too! Annecy is gorgeous and the boat cruise around the alpine lake is really beautiful.

It's hard to go wrong anywhere in the Alps, to be honest, whether it's the Austrian, Swiss, Italian, or French Alps. There is just so much beauty to take in and every town and city I have spent time in has been wonderful.

With that said, Malta is fantastic. My wife and I got married there and the history with the Knights Templar and the Knights Hospitaller, St. Paul getting shipwrecked there, its importance during WWII, etc. is fascinating. If you take the hydrofoil ferry across to Sicily, Taormina is gorgeous.

There are just too many places to pick a favorite and that's not even including the USA!
