what watch to get?

patek 5205g blue dial or F.P Journe octa lune platinum

1. the 5205 cheapest price I could find new is 40k

2. the Journe is 42k new and I could get a used octa reserve for 25K

Will use this watch as a more hybrid dressy/high casual fare
already have a sporty watch for lower casual fare

I am torn and cant decide, wish I had the $$$ for both.

I have both. FPJ gets more wrist time.
It is a matter of personal preference as both of those are great watches.

BTW, FPJ Octa Luna for $25k? If that is a 40 mm case, then it is a bargain...

I thought your question was about Lune.

OP, wouldn't you compare the 5205 to the FPJ Octa Calendrier for the similar complications? Even then, they have very different ways to present the date and time. My preference is still the 5205 with the dial, case construction, lugs, balance and color.

Both are epic so it comes down to how much more you like the 5205? Do you like it $15,000 more?

If you truly want the best quality between those, we all know FPJ is the way to go. Easy choice :-)

PS: 120 hour power reserve is niiiiice.

If you don’t care about an AC complication, then I’d go for a pre owned octa lune . I have a 38mm octa lune in RG and much prefer it to a 5205 aesthetically. At the moment the delta for a new vs pre owned Journe is too high to not consider going preowned .

I like the way the Patek displays the information, digitally or however you call it. Very easy to read. Is the Journe an AC? That is a useful complication.

I like to decide upon the watch that suits my tastes and purpose. And then to pursue it with a passionate voraciousness. Like an automobile, or a lady, there is no reason to settle for something less than what pleases you most based upon price. Wait longer and save for the desire of your heart...there you will find everlasting satisfaction.

You really can’t go wrong. With PP you’ve got the name and tradition. With FPJ you’ve got more of an off-the-beaten-path connoisseur’s brand that’s a bit quirky and less traditional. The question is which one would you enjoy wearing more? Personally if I had both in my watch box I would always reach for the Journe.

I hope you can put both on your wrist before you make up your mind. There’s a fineness and solidity to FPJ that really appeals to me.

Thank you everyone for the responses. I have a hard decision to make. Goona have to try both on again. Local AD here in nyc doesnt have the 5205 blue dial in stock but can get it from another AD to try it on. I had the rose gold on my wrist, was nice. Am sure the blue will look even better. But that FPJ just has some life of its own as well.

One more vote for the 5205 (although I'm biased, since I own one namely the R with opaline white dial). I just think the 5205 is far better looking from an aesthetic point of view - I think it's drop-dead gorgeous.

But either way, other people's opinions are not what matter the most here... Which do YOU like more? Which is one will make you smile more every time you look at it, not just now but next year and the year after that?

If you're still not sure, then give it more time, eventually one will probably emerge as having more staying power as you marinate on them. Then you'll know for sure which to get.

Have fun deciding. Cheers,

That fantastic 5711/1R of yours made me suspect you were a man of fine taste, but now I know for sure :-). .

Cheers Ninja, and I hope you and your family are enjoying a great Holiday Season (possibly with a certain other really cool blue-dialed addition :-) )

Fortunate enough to own the 5205G blue, I absolutely love it and highly recommend it +1 for the 5205G.

Love FPJ but here are some points to consider :
- PP is the inventor of the annual calendar complication
- 5205G blue dial was a new release in 2018
- 5205 has lumed hands (although tiny)
- The case and lugs architecture of the 5205 is just sublime and so unique, you won’t get tired of it

FPJs are beauties and you cannot go wrong, my favorites are the Resonance 2019 final edition and of course the rockstar CB.

Good luck with your choice...it will be a good one at the end so no pressure!

i have a france-china 50 years anniversary octa lune (platinum) - love it. beautiful dial and hefty presence on the wrist but it is not AC and now im considering to add 5205r black dial. I tried it before and I felt it was different than octa lune.

that said, if you have to choose between these two..i will prob go for 5205G.

If it has to be a 5205 or the Journe I'd get the 5205R w opaline dial. In reality though I'd rather get a 5905R or P w black dial than any of those two.
