Could you imagine a waiting list for a shaving brush?
People just going out of their way to make simple tasks a luxurious endeavor. Not for me.... |

I have a vintage Gillette Slim and a few other Safety Razors along with Badger and Boar brushes, but I'm sporting a beard these days so it gets little use. I still use my Atra handle and cheap blades from Amazon for neck cleanup though. I'm a cheap bastard.

Not offended at all as if I did not want to pay the money for that brush or the other 8 of them I bought, just would have passed them on by. There is really no need what so ever for it but heck i wanted it...

Benn using the same exact combination for 33 years with great results: Gillette Atra Handle, Gillette Atra Plus Razor, and Gillette Foamy Shaving Cream.

Isn't it difficult holding your head at a 90º angle to shave?

So, back to the original topic, kind of... can anyone recommend a good "starter" straight razor that I can try? I have a "safety" razor (Edwin Jagger) which works well, but I still nick myself often and I have to go over my face several times to get a close shave. I do have a rather heavy beard. Oh, I also just noticed (when looking up the name) that my brush (also EJ, badger I suspect) handle (bakelite?) is really disintegrating. Almost falling apart on the edges. Looks like crap, as if I drop it every morning (I do not). And the bristles are not holding up well. Of course, it was inexpensive and is nearly 20 years old...

Not sure what color/tone of the skin would make any difference on what Razor to choose from..?

I don't have a crazy high end stuff, but I do enjoy a leisurely shave using a brush and old fashioned double edged safety razor.

Funny thing about shaving brushes. There's only a couple of sources for globally for the knots. The top line knot can be had for $50.00e. It's a high mountain white badger hair knot. The rarest of badger hair from the high mountains of China. The creme de la creme of badger hair. Long white tips, extremely soft natural hair, well packed with extra hair, great backbone Measures Base 21.3mm Loft 65mm Tuff 22mm.
Plisson and every other brush manufacturer use these same knots for their brushes. There's no other suppliers and they don't make their own knots. So essentially anything more than the $50 your paying will be for the handle material and finish. Everyone can judge for themselves if the handle was worth the price. All mine are custom hand made brushes. The handles are one of a kind some made out of very exotic materials. Knots made from both boar and badger. None cost more than $200.00

Someone please school me. What is the difference between normal store bought brush and a Plisson in terms of use? I understand the craftsmanship piece, what about function and feel?

Pretty much all are bought or purchased in a store if not brick and motor then online... Surely one does not have to be "SCHOOLED" about a simple run of the mill shaving brush. They all do the same no matter the price and also can get by without even using one to apply cream if you choose....

I think most of the store bought brushes will be from boar bristles, not badger hair. Higher end stores may sell badger, like Art of Shaving. I find the cheaper boar brushes easier to lather. But they take some time to break in (the bristles split and get softer with use). Badger brushes seem to keep the lather warmer longer. Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk Pro |
