Icon5 Cartier vs Grand Seiko...a quartz battle!?!?

I’m going to be picking up a dress watch for my collection. I only wear a dressy watch maybe 20 times a year so, yes, I believe I am going to be buying a quartz. It just makes sense. It’s less expensive, it will still have the right time when I pick it up and won’t take up space in my winder. I am eyeing the Cartier Solo Large or the Grand Seiko SBGX259. I want a white dial as my dress watch as it looks clean and goes with anything.

Anyone own either or both? I know the fit and finish of the GS is awesome, but the history and look of the Cartier is also. They are roughly the same price.

Which would you choose and why?

I have owned the Cartier for exactly 6 years (bought 18 Oct 2012), I still love it, it's an iconic watch

Yea the history is surely behind it. I usually don’t like Roman numerals but on that specific watch it looks fantastic. I was going to go with the bracelet version and buy a nice blue leather strap to go with it, if indeed I choose it

The Cartier is a dress watch, the GS you mentioned is not.

To me the GS is very dressy. The hands, no lume and overall style says dress watch to me.

Dress watches go on leather straps.
My vote is for the Cartier.

If one wanted a quartz dress watch, I don't think one could do any better than the midsized Cartier Tank Solo, but I'd get it on the black alligator strap.

Both come on bracelet with dresses them down a bit, but a leather strap on the Cartier looks way better I think

The bracelet is only $200 more I believe so it’s worth getting and then buying a nice black leather strap for it also. Actually if I got that, I’d get a neat blue leather strap too.

Just to throw you a curveball. Same shape as Cartier, more expensive, but I like my JLC Reverso...

Yep I’m a fan of that also. If I wore a dress watch more I would consider it but wearing a dress watch maybe 20 times a year I can’t spend that much. Rather use the extra money on a watch I wear often. That’s an amazing piece tho

I really like the JLC Reverso idea! Around twenty times a year comes out to be about once every two weeks and that's not that infrequent for a dress watch. You might find yourself wearing it more often too. One nice thing about the new Reversos is that they have quick-change straps, so for a minimal investment you can get an extra JLC buckle and strap (perhaps a tan ostrich) and have a totally different looking watch. (The Arabic numerals also make it a bit more versatile than the Cartier's Roman numerals and going for the Duo like scarlet knight and I have would give you even more variety.) Also, the Reverso would be a pleasure to wind, not a burden, every two weeks or so. Sure, the price of the Reverso is considerably more than the Cartier but the two can't really be compared except in the looks department.

I like the GS! It can be worn dress up or down and is more versatile to me.

For me, for like daily or more frequent use, I would prefer the technical abilities of the Grand Seiko....

.....however for the situation you describe, if it's only going to be worn a few times a year.... I think the Cartier is more interesting, and more dressy.
