Rolex 1665 Double Red MarkIV- is it fit collector's requirements?
Hi All,
Does this DRSD MarkIV dial with 5.3M serial fit collector's profile? Does the patina aged as it should? Thanks!! |

The round casebacks reds are tricky, at 5.3 it's in theory POSSIBLY ok and could be accepted as red from birth but the serial in the caseback is essential, but even then it should be considerably cheaper than a straight case back mk4.
However, I'm only on phone but I don't like the caseback engraved serial number at all. What's price level ? |

The straight case back: When it says Rolex in a straight line across the caseback.
The round caseback: When it says Rolex along the circumference of the caseback, like the example you posted. The reason it is tricky is because most DRSD's had a straight caseback, however there have been documented DRSD's with great provenance and round casebacks from collectors with great reputations. With Rolex when they transition from one model to the next there is some overlap in dials and casebacks etc. If you haven't yet bought the watch, I feel safe in saying to you that many dealers are suspicious once the serial number gets past the 5.2 million range. Once past this point in theory it could be a great white 1665 with the dial swapped out. My advice: if you are going to spend this kind of money, buy a watch without issues. Presently there are many examples out there that are very nice at reasonable prices. Good luck. |

as above... even if the inside caseback engraving wasnt suspect - which it is - that's way too much for a 5.2 transitional in perfect condition let alone a 5.3 that would need everything to be 110% to be accepted as anything other than a white that has had the red dial swapped in...
the going rate over the last few years for even a 5.2 round caseback has been i guess 75% the price of a mk4 drsd. |

Very close in serial # as mine.
My great white mark1 is 5.39mil. I guess one of the first to appear. I agree with jedly1, and Beaumont. You can find a mark4 drsd with straight across caseback in the same range of money (maybe add a little) with no questions. If you are set on a drsd pass and keep looking. Jeff |

Seeing other later casebacks with the serial stamped on the inside,(mark4 and 5) and comparing the fonts, I don't like the stamping on the inside at all.

Try searching on vrf, you should find some, a lot of the inside caseback engraving experience comes from Milsub/ comex also as they have the same 3-5 mill range , but these aren't posted on public forums, some make it auction house catalogues though.
