panerai in house mouvement - please comment

Hi guys,

just looking to get some comments about the in house Panerai mouvement. Are they worth the price? what has been your experience with them. How accurate are them?

Looking forward to hearing you guys.

Cheers.

The more I know about watches, the more I wonder if inhouse is really worth the premium

And I'm not talking about Patek or Lange, these are superior when you look at the finishing.

But something like a Panerai or Breitling ? What's wrong with ETA / Valjoux ? They made millions of these so you can be sure they are superb.

Now, to answer your question ... they are good and accurate.
But imo it's more about marketing these days. They just charge a lot more if they can put the 'inhouse' label on it.
Let's face it, the 372 is a nice and good watch but 7500 euro (don't know the US price but probably cloose to 10K) for a 2 hands watch ???
Look at brands like Zenith and JLC, they ONLY make inhouse pieces and they give you a lot more for that price. A LOT MORE.

I don't mind either, it's just from what I've seen the in house are cased in watches too thick for my wrist.

I don't have much to say from a technical POV ... but the calibre 2002 in my 233 is a beauty to look at, and it runs at about 1 sec/day average. We'll see how it fares over time.

Did I mention the 8 day power reserve?

This is purely being a snob, but knowing that you have something just that little bit more special is nice as well.

Very wise! There's absolutely nothing wrong with ébauches and they are tried & true than vs newer inhouse movements.

I have watches with both in house and not. They all tell time and they all have a value. It just depends on what excites you at the time you are buying. History is a great indicator of future performance!

Is in-house "worth" it? Only you can answer that for yourself. Robust, accurate and refined. In-house or not. That's what matters IMO.

All that being said, to be fair, an ETA is still Swiss...I don't think I would be excited to wear a European watch with a Chinese movement, but, if a day comes when a Chinese watch interests me, why not?

Here, I think the ETA movement is nicer to look at

I have to add that my 233 has been +8 in two and a half weeks ... that's less than half a second / day!

I love the eta in my 111.

Now I seem to recall the last few reviews of in-house Pam movements in Watchtime magazine were not too kind re: results of tests for accuracy...

See my post right above. The 233 has the Calibre P.2002 movement and it has been spot on. I know that Serge (Travelller) who also has a 233 has been very happy with it as well.

Good to know. Have you had to have your watch serviced? Understand some in house movements must be sent to Switzerland and can take quite a while...

Nope, the watch is just a couple months old. I guess I got lucky for once (I usually get dust under the crystal and other problems )

I bought a new 233 last summer and it ran for less than 24 hours...it took the service center in Texas 5 weeks to tell me it would take another 4 weeks to fix and never admitted anything was wrong with the watch!!! My AD offered me a new watch, but I told them no thank you and they refunded my money. I understand the fang PR can be an issue, but once fixed no more issues...this is my experience anyway...I now own an N series 112.
