Should i Be worrried
Hello all. i was considering an offer on this watch, however the spiel says
"Watch is in very good condition, however the serial numbers are worn off, because of the way pins were rubbing the case. (Look at the photo) This is the reason why the watch in such a good price." I've included the photos is this a severe red flag or could be the truth? |

It seems unlikely the serial numbers would be rubbed off on such a newer watch. This can happen, but I have mostly seen this on older vintage models. It also seems strange the middle numbers are the only ones affected. In my opinion, too much potential to be a stolen watch or something else not correct. I would pass. If the price is low vs market, there is a reason.

I can’t figure out how to post a different thread here so search the forum for a thread I started titled “Scratch on model and serial number”.
I had the same question and there is quite a few that gave me some good advice on there. Good luck with your decision! Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |

I recently had a 1998 submariner that had this same issue. Mine was a more defined scratch that was almost identical on both sides and was 100% from the bracelet endlinks. Mine didn’t have the higher scratch like yours has though.

It happens from improperly adjusted end links causing the center of the link to rub on the case. Not uncommon at all.

This actually happens a lot with no holes case models with oyster band... the oyster bands from this time period had a protrusion that rubs the case... I'm actually surprised when I find a ladies 79173 with oyster band that didn't have half the serial number rubbed off in the center...

Every watch I’ve seen it on has been a holes case.

It can happen, but what concerns me is the seller is willing to discount the price based on that. To me that suggest something problematic

When the ears are bent to fit the case better, sometimes they are bent incorrectly and will bow the center of the end link causing it to hit the case.

Spring bars that are worn (bent), and/or the incorrect-size. The inner "barrel" of the end piece being worn/stretched. The inside of the center (end) link of the bracelet being worn/stretched. This can also cause the outer (end) links of the bracelet to machine divots/wear into the inner case lugs (and outer edges of the links themselves). |
