Question about trolling on the forum.

I just read up on a thread started by *the-steel-guy* or something like that where he gotten banned for trolling on the forum.
What is considered an online troll here in the community?
More importantly, what are these individuals trying to accomplish?
Are they simply trying to start multiple threads so that they can have 1000 post and start gaining recognition in the classified section?
Honestly, I am curious. Thanks for reading..

Some just love watching Rome burn.

It's akin to watching Powell lie and lol'ing at the stock market as USD becomes worthless paper.

The paradox of trolling is that when you ask questions about trolling it's sometimes considered trolling.

Lots of posts are just people fooling around, and sometimes it's just people having a bad day.

We don't have to read all posts and we don't have to respond. Its a choice. The mods look after the rest.

One tactic is bringing politics, the federal reserve or immigration policy randomly into threads.

In my forum experience (TRF and beyond) a troll is someone who seems to want to start conflict for conflict's sake. A pattern emerges where said troll develops a history of instigating others. Sometimes this is subtle and other times it is very direct. Often with no other positive contributions over time

I always assumed the troll’s agenda is their own entertainment.

Troll = Obvious negative poster or commenter looking to stir crap.

They don't get to 1000 posts and usually are given rope to hang themselves. The Mods keep an eye out...

To be fair, and before we group anyone that doesn't answer every 'is it safe, best investment, basel guess, why isn' the _____ popular, and watch out' thread with absolute seriousness -- doesn't make them a troll.

In most cases, all threads get a solid answer within the top 3 posts and therefore the thread is done and is left open for fun until the Mods lock it or someone says a RPG comment.

It’s a good question. I’ve never understood why a troll would waste their time on a forum if they have no real intention of being real.

Somewhat like Schrodinger's cat, minus the cat.

Sometimes people make antagonistic statements not realizing they're being a jerk. Other times it's on purpose just to get a rise out of people. I suppose a third case might be mistaking sarcasm for seriousness, but that thankfully seems less common.

Lately the most egregious trolls seem to be repeat customers — members who were recently banned and returned for more.

A troll is someone who posts with the sole purpose of getting a reaction from others. They bait people into arguments.

We'll keep this in mind. Thanks for bringing it to the attention of the group.

You raise a great point though. I'd be curious what the split is on users by country.

Right?! It doesn't make sense for a troll to get banned and then come back with a different account just to stir up a controversy... I gotten my answer about trolling now.

But good quality trolling requires intelligence. Needs to be plausible enough to be taken seriously, while still "off" enough to infuriate the masses

Scots and Brits are two different breeds. They might live on the same island but there's literally nothing that the two have in common. I prefer Scotland by the way (John is going to kill me if I side with the English)
