Purists Look Away

I picked my 1978 5513 up from my AD yesterday. It had been off to RSC Bexley for an overhaul since 14th February. It has had: Dial & hands changed, new crystal, new rotor and re-bush of lug holes as well as a service for the cost of £641.
I know the mantra "you should have kept the dial and hands original" but, quite frankly I wanted a watch I could see in the dark. After hawking around a few dealers in January I wasn't offered much at all for it so I decided to bring it up to a fully usable condition.

Well I would defiantly ask them to return the old dial to you, unless they gave you a discount on replacement, its your property not Rolex.

I'm not to sure what the policy is in other countries, but here in the UK Rolex will not return any parts that they have replaced.

It's done now.

At least you know there's another 30 years worth of life and decent night time readability in the watch.

The old dial and hands wouldn't have gone for much over £300 so it's just one of those things.

I thought Rolex refused to return parts as a policy?

Yeah, Rolex will not return old parts, and you will not be compensated for them.

In the UK you can specify in advance for the return of the original dial/hands etc.

I completely agree with you and would want the parts myself, i had just heard all the horro stories about other RSC service experiances where parts were not returned so i got confused, must be a US policy only. Yet another way us Yanks lead the way...

To each his own, but for a 5513 I'd prefer to keep everything original. For modern luminescence, I'd get a modern watch (I have a Tudor 79190 Sub on which the 10+ year-old tritium is still quite visible in the dark).

You must have had a "Maxi dial" on your 1978 Sub. Oh well...

I think it looks great - c'est la vie about the original parts. Should anyone want to keep them, and RSC won't let you, just take them off before you send it in!

In Canada you DO NOT get any parts that have been removed from your watch either - even though they are/were your property. Deal with it.

Finally an old Rolex which looks good. I don't get the "patina" thing at all.

Same with cars, original body panels and paint are of course a big plus in a vintage car but ONLY if they are in good condition. An all original rust bucket won't be as appealing as a perfectly restored car.

It is still an old Rolex which happens to look like new! Very nice to see.

I just sold an old (1972) 1016 which came back from service. Dial and hands replaced and a full service. That watch looked sooooo good and the new owner is extremely happy with it.

BTW, in Belgium replaced old parts are destroyed, never returned.
