your poor AD

a story in the Detroit Free Press
very interesting - something I never considered

I wonder if they do the same thing at the end of every month under 31 days?

World's largest watch store prepares for Daylight Savings Time

By Lateshia Dowell
FREE PRESS STAFF WRITER
With today’s technology Daylight Savings Time seems to just pass on by with little thought and not much hassle.

Cell phones automatically update in the wee hours of the morning, leaving you not to worry about missing that morning meeting or waking up late for church Sunday morning.

Most household appliances can be altered with just one simple touch of a button.

But imagine what it's like to have to manually change the hands of time hundreds of times.

This is what happens at Tourneau, the World’s Largest Watch Store, located inside the Somerset Collection in Troy. With an inventory of about 2,000 watches, 500 of which had to manually be set forward an hour in observance of Daylight Savings Time, which occurs at 2 a.m. early Sunday morning.

“As far as advancing, we have about 400-500 quartz watches in the store, so all of those get reset,” said Ahmed Haidar, General Manager.

This process, involving six employees facilitated by three managers, began on Monday and was finished later in the week. An important accessory to this duty are white gloves which aide in preventing smudging to the watches.

“It was done before today because we didn’t want to come in today with anything to do,” said Haidar.

Turning forward an average of 100 watches a day, according to Haidar only takes about one full hour with the entire staff working together at once.
So, tomorrow when you find yourself burdened by the touch of a button, remember things could be more difficult.

Interesting point...didn't even think about that. At least, they have to do some work to earn that money !

I always wondered how they kept up with the time change and the date resets at the large shops. I guess they have plenty of time on their hands these days.

According to my AD Rolex won't be releasing Daylight Savings until after Basel......and it will be a little longer till it actually hits the dealer.

what do you mean daylight savings?
jumping an hour, and losing an hour every year? what if congress changes the dates again? just wondering how on earth that would work?

that would be really complex when you factor that some people live in areas that don't follow DST

It seems a bit anal to change all of the watches with DST...can't they just adjust them when they sell them? Also gives a good excuse to show the customer how to set up the watch.

I have a hard time setting the watches in my house. I can't imagine having to reset 2000 watches.

We keep all of our quartz watches on time. That means we adjusted them for the short Februrary month, and then a week later, spun them all an hour ahead. I'm sure we have AT LEAST 300 quartz watches, probably more.

Doesn't take long at all if 4 or 5 people get on it. Maybe a 1/2 hour. Not exactly like most jewelery stores are buzzing as soon as the doors crack open ;)

Why bother?
There is no need to do that. An employee can do that when he/she shows the watch.

I guess that newspaper has no better article to publish than this.

I don't see the point to it, especially for the quartz watches. That means their batteries are being drained while they sit in the shop, which doesn't make sense.
