Peter Luger NYC

I’m headed to NYC in November for our annual visit.
We’ve been going every year for the last 10 now. And, every year, I try to get a reservation for Friday or Saturday night at Peter Luger’s in Brooklyn. They book 6 weeks out and, every year, I get shut out.
Anyone have any “pro tips” on how I can get in there for dinner at a reasonable hour? I’d like to sit down anywhere from about 6:30 (earliest) to 9:00 at the latest.
I think they take walk-ins. Is that a reasonable move?
Bribe the maitre d?
I’d really like to get there once. I’ve been to many other top steakhouses in NY and enjoyed them all. But just once I’d like to try Lugers.

I take it you’re just going over the weekend? I’ve only gone there on week night & it gets a good crowd! PS no credit cards accepted

Try their Great Neck location. I know it's not the same but it's still pretty darn good. Remember to bring cash.

We just did a GTG at the Great Neck location and has a blast. It's right on the border of Queens, so not too far from NYC.

I hadn’t really considered Great Neck. Maybe I should. I’m staying on Central Park South. Any idea how long a taxi/Uber ride would be from there?

It’s about 25 miles from Manhattan, an hour.

Good luck.

I wish I had a tip.

I’ve been a few times. Never during peak hours, but it was always busy. I’ve been to great neck one as well. It’s not the same. But it’s still incredible.

Thanks Seth. I realize I’m looking at the 2 busiest nights of the week.
I’ve heard of people just walking in and, after a wait, getting a table. I’m hesitant to try this in case it doesn’t work out.

I understand you want the experience of going, but I caution you not to have high expectations. Luger’s is not fancy by any stretch, you have to pay cash, and the sliced porterhouse steak experience at Luger’s has been widely replicated at any number of NYC steakhouses. My best piece of advice: don’t sleep on the extra thick cut bacon appetizer. IMHO it’s the one thing that Luger’s does better than the others. It might end up being the highlight of your meal. Enjoy!

Its worth a shot.

Or if possible go for lunch. That’s usually easier. But that time of year has endless tourists like us trying to get in.

FWIW, it’s worth the effort. Truly the food is amazing.

Same here, John. Annual visit and almost a decade doing the same. In 2014 I was one of the walk-in customers but I don't remember which day of the week lol. The wife and I waited around one hour at the bar and it was great.

+1 for lunch. This goes for most popular restaurants. Lunch is usually an overlooked option, but typically you can get a reservation easily, it’s cheaper and the quality of food, service and ambiance is the same.

Agree on the bacon. But that too has been replicated. Wolfgang’s is a close second. Apparently there is a relation of some kind. And it’s easier to get to on Park in Manhattan.

I haven’t been to Lugers in a few years. But I still remember them as the best.

And yeah, definitely not fancy. Not by a long shot.

Yeah you'll never get a Friday or Saturday res, won't happen. Just too many regulars and glad-hands. When my wife and I go I just plan on eating at 6, get there at 5, have a drink and tip the host/manager in an hour I have a table.

I’d also highly recommend Club A Steakhouse as a fantastic alternative.

Peter Luger is overrated tbh.

It's also laughable that they don't accept credit cards.

They take online reservations but hold some back for call in reservations. How many people in your group?

Better yet stay in the city and go to Quality Meats- get the bacon app.

Don’t question the ingredients just order it- one of the best things you will eat this year.

Just the two of us.
They accept reservations 6 weeks out, not a day before. I’ve called exactly 6 weeks out and either get “sorry, we're booked” or something at 11:00 at night.
I think they must have standing reservations for most weekends.

Went to Quality Meats last year. So far, that’s been my favorite.

Like prob a lot of guys on here I’m in the NYC area and have been to pretty much every steakhouse. There are equally if not better steakhouses. Like others have said Wolfgang’s which is my favorite, And they have multiple locations. Strip House is great and they have a monster slice of chocolate cake. Old homestead, Ben & Jacks etc.

Or you can have a great Italian meal at “The Leopard” (your welcome in advance)

Any preference on which Wolfgang’s is your favorite?
I will definitely look into “The Leopard”. Thank you!

For one the service is way better. Lugers always rush’s you out. I personally think the food overall is better as well.
