Which "exit" Rolex should I buy at grey prices?

I luckily have my 2 favorite Rolex models - Datejust and Submariner. But I have the itch, and I feel like just one more would satisfy me. Hopefully forever, but those are famous last words. But I think one more would keep me happy for a while and I'm just going to observe what happens with the Rolex market from the sidelines.

I'm going to go grey. Definitely open to preowned. I'm kinda all over the place because there are few Rolexes I don't like. But I've narrowed it down to 3 models. But within those models, there are a lot of options I am considering.

I'd like your advice on which specific reference would fit in with my current small Rolex collection (16013, 126200, 124060), but also maybe the best "buy" at current insane prices.

1. Explorer II : I'm truly dial agnostic on this. I like white and black equally. I might slightly prefer the 5-digits due to their smaller size and look. For these I think I want to either go brand new and get the newer models with the updated movements, or if I go preowned just go 5-digit.

2. GMT Master : I think I like the BLNR and BLRO equally with a preference towards the Oyster bracelets. I also like the discontinued LN, but probably slightly prefer the BLNR/BLRO. I also like the 16710 but only with Pepsi bezel. No interest in any TT or PM here.

3. Daytona : This was previously my ultimate grail, but it's lost some luster over the years due to how difficult they are to get and also my preference for watches with dates. Soured on chronos a bit too. But it's still a watch I've wanted for a long time. If I go "big" here, it would be the black dial ceramic. I slightly prefer the white dial, but not $10k more. Daytona is also one of the few watches I actually like the TT model as well, but only the white dial. I also like the older 116520, stronger preference there for white dial.

16710 GMT

Don't worry about the bezel color they are easily DIY swapped and aren't expensive.

Something with meteorite dial, or Daytona with ice.

I’d go full gold 90’s 5 digit gmt. I know it’s not on your list but they can be had at a decent rate, it would change your collection up quite a bit and will only be harder to find in a few years time.

Get your ultimate grail for an exit watch or your itch will never be scratched and you'll be back here in another 6 months.

I would get a 16570 Explorer II polar. It would make a great addition to your collection and it would scratch the GMT itch while adding something without a black dial.

It's crazy that just 1 year ago these Exp IIs were all selling for the high $7K/low $8K range. I thought that was insane compared to just a few years ago when they were sitting around $4K. A rising tide lifts all boats...

Black EXPII provides the most value

Runner up would be a clean 116710 BLNR

If budget is out the window go ahead and get that Daytona but after owning several of each I can’t honestly say I prefer Daytonas to GMTs or Subs for that matter.

TT Daytona. Everyone needs a little bling. I’ve got the white dial and love it.

Hate to break it to you, but that's what all of us with a watch problem say.

I'll throw my opinion out there anyway - DD40.

I would go with your option 1 Explorer 2 polar dial modern version. Easy wearing and can be had at MSRP or at relatively small premium over MSRP. The polar dial contrasts nicely with the Sub in the sports line and you have the Datejust for those non-sporty occasions.

I’d say ceramic Daytona (black dial is amazing in person) or Pepsi GMT. If you want to save a little, find a late model 16710.

Famous last words indeed. If you're serious about this last one, then splurge on the Daytona and get off this forum

Which "exit" Rolex should I buy at grey prices?

Start with the first one you can get on your list and keep buying or picking them off as you get them.

Good Luck and I hope you get them ALL!

DJ + Sub is a fantastic combo.

What configuration is your datejust? If it has a dark dial, then I think adding a white-dial Exp II is a good move, esp. the 16570, that model is perfect in terms of dimensions. It has a standard 20 mm lug width and looks good on all sorts of straps, NATO, rubber... so it can compliment your collection with this added versatility.

For me if it was my money ..

Older Pepsi -> BLNR -> BLRO -> EXP II -> Daytona

It's funny that I put it in that order since I have the BLNR and a white dial DaytonaC....

+1 for the 16710 with any bezel insert. It is IMHO one of the most timeless pieces Rolex has/had to offer and is the most versatile watch with three different bezel inserts and easy swap from oyster to jubilee.

By changing up the different parts you can have a brand new watch anytime you want.

BLRO on Oyster and add the jubilee bracelet for when you want to change things up. Brings a little color into the collection too.
