For me it was not buying more years ago when I started. I’m still hunting down many of the same pieces I was trigger shy on then, but at twice+ the cost.

Selling my Lange 1815 Chronograph some years ago. The original dial version in white gold and white dial. I wish I hadn't. I really miss that watch and would love to own it again...

I had a 14060M (my first Rolex) and sold it, bought an 114060 which was nice, I liked it... eventually I got tired of it and sold it. I really prefer the new bracelet and ceramic bezel, but I kind of wish I had just kept the first one... it wore much smaller, and that cheesy bracelet is unnoticeable when it's on your wrist.

Choosing a plat/Yachtmaster over a bluesy. Buying said yachtie new then tiring and trading said yachtie for bluesy 9 months later. Very expensive mistake....not quite as expensive as the quartz Cartier tank debacle and Longines Hour Angle I had to have but darn near it. Rarely will you have solid wins with watches but playing with Rolex keeps you losing as little as possible for the sake of the hobby.

I should have kept:

AP 15202
AP 15305
Hulk

Really no regrets since I replaced them with a couple of nice Pateks. Now I did recently get another Hulk. Too expensive to reacquire the APs.

Buying a watch (non-Rolex) based on pictures alone and without trying on.

Poor fit, sold at a slight loss; however, experience was well-worth the lesson learned.

Certainly made few mistakes along the way both flipping and passing on opportunities. I like to think though that I evened things out a bit with some of the watches I picked up and still have......also gotta keep it all in perspective...in the bigger scheme of things these are only watches!

Actually bought the kermit ten years ago and sold it for a very good profit for another project. Wife actually was against selling it. Fast forward a year, shoulda held on but now I just got the blnr and its a keeper.

a few regrets for me.

1. 2002 bought a 16234 as my first Rolex instead of a sports model, picked up my 16610 the following year.
2. 2006 decided to get the Cartier Roadster Chrono over the SD. Cartier was more money back then, but the SD is now triple the retail. The Cartier has dropped in value and I never wear it!
3. 2011 chose AP 26300 instead of the SS Daytona White (at a 10% discount) and AP 15300. Ended up getting the priciest of the 3, also the worse performing.

I wear all my watches, and don't view them as investments. But if you look at monetary value, I made many bad decisions.

I visited a Dealer who just received a SubC, BLNR, and an LvC. I probably could have negotiated a good discount and picked up 2 watches, but i only decided on getting the SubC. Euro to dollar was at a good rate, VAT refund would have helped and the value of the BLNR & LvC shot up. The 3 watches would have been about 20k, basically the cost of a BLNR and LvC, could've tried to flip them and end up with my SubC for about 3-4k

I worked at an AD for a short time in high school (1981). The shop had a Rolex Cosmograph that had been there for a few years. Retail was about $575, was offered to me for $350 (dealer cost). I was making $2.85 an hour as a stock boy/helper. I remember thinking I'd have to work over 100 hours to pay for it, so I passed.

Woah. Mine seem downright paltry in comparison.

Had the chance to buy a FPJ Chrono Bleu from a boutique last summer (before the dial issue that has caused a backlog and Rolex-esc waitlist). I still pine over this watch almost daily.

Buying my IWC Portuguese (just never really clicked with the watch and traded it in for my JLC MC chrono).

Don’t really regret many moves as I like to focus forward but I’ve certainly burned some capital and the few that would be up big now are:

Ap15202
Pp5167
Pp5711w
M serial Kermit

The one I wonder about appreciation wise was one of the first Blancpain bathyscaphes in ceramitized titanium I think it was called - they scraped that metal shortly after release
So while not a deep market for that brand that one may prove to be special many years from now. Or not

1675 gilt
1655 original owner barn find mint 10

I could go on and on as there are dozens more sadly! I had 4 Y LV’s and several early F’s as well 3 bought new from AD’s by me. Ok I am done now but there are lots of photos of them that live on forever here from years back.
And those are just the Rolexes... still better to have loved and lost than to have just lost.
